Makapu'u Tom Tom Hike!

  • Mar 24, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Always wanted to do this hike, and with the surgery date set, gotta push the limits...Art will be leading the way (trust me you don't want me to lead, cause I guarantee I will get us lost)

WHO's IN??

Distance: 4Miles
Difficulty: Intermediate-Advanced/ Ridge/Makapu’u.
Meeting time: 8:00 / Hike Start Time: 8:30

The hike starts by crossing over to the mountain side of the road and begin to climb up the rocks that mark the beginning of the Ko'olau range. The trail is not well-defined at all. Most of the time you will be hiking on rocky terrain and staying close to the ridge-line. Sometimes it is easier to veer away from the ridge-line for a while, and sometimes the trail becomes more defined, usually at the very top of the ridge. Because this is a dry area what little vegetation there is is low so you have views in all directions throughout the hike.

As you go further on you will often find yourself on the edge of a near-vertical cliff, and there are many ups and downs. You may see a mountain goat or two (LUNCH?) as this is the perfect terrain for them.

There are many rock formations along the ridge-line, one of which has a large hole in it to make a natural window. There are some parts of the hike where you walk on a road, and there are abandoned buildings and a platform for windsurfers to launch from.

Directions: We'll meet at Waimanalo Beach Park (Ocean side of Kalanianaole Hwy) parking lot is by the baseball field. It has restroom and drinking fountain. Will need to leave some cars there and the rest will carpool to the Makapu'u lookout parking lot.
