The Amazing Rose Parade - Up Close and Personal!

This is a uniquely Californian phenomenon - people crazy enough to stay up all night on the city streets in order to have front row seats for the world's most famous parade, "The granddaddy of them all".  See the most incredible floral creations along with some of the best marching bands in the country.  Why sit at home and watch it on TV?  If you've never been in person, you can't imagine what you are missing!  And this year I personally won't miss it because the Grand Marshal will be Dodgers Announcer Vin Scully.Okay, you don't really have to camp out on the sidewalk all night, although that is part of the whole experience. Those of us who do can stake out enough space for anyone who arrives by 5 or 6 in the morning. We'll have a cook stove to make coffee, hot chocolate and ??? Just bring a blanket, a folding chair and whatever snacks you'd like. Also be prepared for whatever the weather forecast has in store (Jacket? Sunscreen?)We went two years ago and sat in front of Pasadena City College and discovered that this is the best place to hear the bands, because their families all sit in the bleachers there and so they are sure to be playing for us. The south side of the street is best for lighting and pictures. I will post information on where you can park, and when you get there (or any time after midnight) call my cell phone to find out exactly where we are (951) 440-2958.

The parade itself was awesome. Always love seeing the floats in person

Though I didn't get to meet anyone from the group, I'm glad I resumed my tradition of seeing the Rose Parade!! Lonnie & Zachary, thank you for your help in making this an awesome outing; thank goodness for cellphones, huh? :) I hope to meet you and see the rest of the rest of the group at another outing in the near future! If you didn't get a chance to see the parade, I strongly recommend the outing of seeing the floats up close and personal; TV does not do the detail justice. I recommend this outing again, next year. However, I would recommend being more specific on the meeting location, reserving the "campsite" sooner. Have a great 2014, Everyone!! :)

    Where are you camped

I have a feeling this beautiful weather actually worked against us this time... probably with the warm temps an insane number of people have decided that this is the year they're finally going to the parade :-(

What time does the parade start

    December 31, 2013

    • Lonnie

It starts at the start at 8:00, but then takes a while to make its way down the road to where people are waiting on the street.

      January 1, 2014

  • Lonnie

Wow, the word on the street (literally) is that there is no room on the street. We have some people there already and they all say there is no way we're going to find space for the whole group. And even finding any space at all (both on the street and for parking) is extremely difficult. Way crazier than it's been in past years! Anyway, I'm afraid it's going to be every man for himself. If you were planning on coming later, I'm not sure it will even be worth trying, unfortunately. If we do this sometime in the future, I guess we'll have to have enough people go early in the day to get a spot!

Where are you camped at? I should be there around 5 6 am

We are going to be there around 4:30 or 5:00.

Two days away.... I'd like everyone to please check your RSVP and change if you will not be coming. We need to know how many people to expect as space on the street is at a premium, especially saving room for people not spending the night. It would be helpful to add a comment here to let us know when you are planning to arrive, and remember - the more the earlier, the merrier! Especially post a comment if you need a ride or have room to take a rider, and mention where you'll be coming from.

Finally, be sure and check this space before you come as I will post a comment giving details on our specific location once we get there (no guarantee of finding room at our first choice). And keep my phone number handy, (951)[masked] if you have any trouble finding us.

Zachary, do you have a spot out on the street/sidewalk already? Please give me a call! (951)[masked]

Kids are more than welcome, although I don't know specifically who might be bringing theirs. We did have some last time I went. I plan on getting there as soon as I can after about 11:00 pm. Blanket and chair would be sufficient, and/or sleeping bag, folding cot, etc.

Will there be any kids coming? I will go with my 6th grade daughter. When will we start to meet there and start stove fire there? How are we going to go through the night? Just blanket and chairs?

Last year, I parked north of Colorado Blvd, around Walnut and Bonita or Bonnie streets. North side of Walnut, anyway. Wasn't to hard to find a spot. But all bets are off for anyone arriving much after midnight. No telling how far away you'll have to park and walk. Best bet is to drop off people and gear on Colorado and just have one person park and walk.

I paid for guaranteed parking so I could arrive later and not worry about parking. It is about 1 mile from the parade route. Used parkingwhiz application also on internet parkingwhiz.com

Is anyone coming from corona/riverside area? I'd like to carpool/caravan as I'm not certain about parking and I'm not that familiar with the area

I'm looking forward to going. It'll be my first time there. Possibly a few additional crew with my party.

By the way, I put in an order for good weather all week, and it looks like we'll be getting it for the parade! Still, plan to wear layers that you can adjust, especially if spending the night. I suggest a shirt, sweater, and then a jacket. And of course snacks ;-) I'll have a camp stove for some heat, and to make coffee, hot cocoa, etc.

After twenty+ years of watching the parade on t.v, while I lived in MN, I'm looking forward to resuming my home state tradition! For those who have never been, be prepared for an awesome experience, and, possibly, a new tradition for you! :)

I've always want to spend the night but no one wants to do it with me. In front of PCC is the best. Looking forward to meeting up with anyone. I had fun last year and ready for another fun evening..

I was raised in Pasadena and as a child it was mandatory, every year, for my family. As a young adult, I did the overnight thing with friends. I haven't been in decades, but I'm looking forward to experiencing it with my grandchildren. Can hardly wait!
