Rancho San Antonio (Los Altos)

We love this park and trail we did last October, we're hosting it again for those who'd like a pleasant local hike:

Easy to moderate 5.5 mile loop in a beautiful park, one where we've seen lots of wildlife in the past. This park is popular around Deer Hollow Farm, but after that point (3/4 mile out), there are fewer people and more animals/birds. Good hike for beginners! Partially shaded but mostly exposed.

Hike details: http://www.bahiker.com/southbayhikes/rancho.html

Distance, category, and difficulty:
This 5.5 mile loop hike is easy/moderate, with about 800 feet in elevation change. Trailhead elevation is around 350 feet. The hike is flat for about 1 mile, climbs on a moderate grade to about 1045 feet, descends to about 330 feet, and returns to the trailhead on a level grade.

Exposure:
Some shade but mostly exposed.

Estimated Time:
3 hours

Getting there:
From Interstate 280 in Santa Clara County, exit #13 Foothill Expressway. Drive south on Foothill Boulevard and take the first right on Cristo Rey Drive. Drive about 1 mile and turn left into the park.

Address:

Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve

22500 Cristo Rey Dr
Los Altos, CA 94024

Lunch:

Does anyone know a nice place for lunch nearby?

Hi Hikers - Gordon makes a good point about parking being tight - last year we started later, but some people had trouble fnding spots. Unfortunately, I cannot start the hike earlier this Saturday as I need to do something else first - here's what I suggest: > Let's carpool (great idea, Marcie) - meeting in front of Trader Joe's at 2310 Homestead Rd, Los Altos, CA 94024. Meet at 8:50 to leave at 9:00 AM, it's a short drive to the park... > If you are driving directly to the park (not carpooling), please plan to arrive no later than 9:15 - you may need time to walk down 5 minutes from one of the other lots to this final lot As is usual for our group, we'll wait at the meeting spot for 10 minutes past the 9:30 posted start time to allow for minor issues - but no more, to be fair to those who made an effort to be there on time. The meeting spot for the hike is the final parking lot at Rancho, near the restrooms.

    Cheers, Patty

Patty: The Rancho parking lots are full by mid-morning on weekends. Since I live nearby, I checked this morning around 9 am. With the exception of a few spots at the "horse-trailer lot" (the southernmost), all lots were full. I'm not even sure if an 8:30 start near the restrooms would work. Gordon

Any chance we can park a little farther out. ( maybe in one of the neighborhoods) & have someone shuttle the balance of us in.
