Superstition Ridgeline

This is undoubtedly one of the top hikes in this area. It is a classic!

This hike covers the ridgeline between Superstition Peak and Flat Iron. We will start at the Carney Springs Trailhead hike up to Superstition Peak via West Boulder Saddle and then the ridgeline to Flat Iron and down Siphon Draw to Lost Dutchmen State Park. It will be about 13 miles and 5,000' of elevation gain. It is an extremely difficult hike and because of the necessity for a car shuttle, will be limited to a set number of people. I will entertain having 2 or 3 more very fit people if possible. Depending on the number of people we will need 3 to 4 vehicles. The more people the vehicle will hold, the easier the car shuttle situation.

We will meet in the parking lot next to the bank near Trader Joes and carpool from there. We will drop off most of the hikers at Carney Springs Trailhead and take all the vehicles up to Lost Dutchmen State Park. One vehicle will then bring all the drivers back to Carney Springs Trailhead to begin the hike.

This hike will feature bushwhacking, scrambling, and route-finding!

If it is warm out it is even more difficult. Bring lots of water!

Bring energy food and more water (4 liters recommended, more if it's hot).

If inclement weather is a possibility, this hike will be cancelled.

Hike at your own risk.

What a wonderful hiking I had. Perfect weather, great hikers, and the best scenery I ever had! Walking on the top of mountain one after another was just great. Thank you very much Jeff for organizing and Mike for carpooling.

Donna could take her car which could carry a total of 5 as well. It's also tight but it would only be about 20 miles. And we only have 9 now so that means 4 in one car and 5 in the other. We would still take 3 cars from here.

Jeff, did you want me to drive the LC?

Weather in Apache Junction is going to be 77 degrees and sunny. I would bring at least 4 liters of water. We are on an exposed ridgeline. Better to have too much water than not enough. I've been there on this hike. Try to be at the meetup site by 0500. If you are running late or need to contact me my number is[masked]-4508. Let's plan on Mike, Peter, and Donna driving unless something else happens.

Jeff, If needed I can drive my Land Cruiser. It seats 5 and can hold 2-3 more in the back cargo area for a shuttle. Let me know. She's thirsty one.

We shouldn't need to take it. Unless somebody doesn't show up last minute.

Hey Jeff I have a Civic that can hold 5 but it would be a little tight but I would be up to drive if you need someone to

My car can hold five people, included me, but it is pretty small (Corolla 2000), and it will not survive the dirty road, otherwise I can try...I'll bring the carpool money.

I need a final hard count of everybody that is in for this one so we can plan on how many vehicles we need for the car shuttle. As it stands right now, 10 is a good number for taking 3 cars. We really need two vehicles that can hold a driver and 4 people each in addition to Mike's vehicle. That will cut down on the shuttle time greatly when we are done. If anybody has a vehicle that can hold a total of 5 people, please speak up. We would drive up with the 10 hikers spread over the 3 vehicles and drop all the hikers off at the trailhead. The 3 drivers would then take all vehicles to Lost Dutchmen SP. We would leave the 2 vehicles that can take 5 there. Mike would then bring drivers to the trailhead. When we are done the 10 hikers would get in the 2 cars to go back to pick up Mike's car at the trailhead. We would only have 5 per car for the 20 miles back to Mike's car. Based on mileage, etc, riders should bring $20 each for the drivers. Any questions or comments. My number:[masked]

Is anyone interested in car/tent camping at Lost Dutchmen State Park on Friday night? Our hike ends at this park.

    February 13, 2013

I may be interested, but wouldn't be able to leave Tucson until about 8:30 pm.

Hi Peter, it turns out camping up there is not going to work for us. Thanks.

I'll be doing Weaver's Needle the same day. From the descrip, I don't think paths will cross - kinda cool, though.

Oh and by the way, this is one of the most difficult hikes in this area. If you have not been hiking hard hikes regularly, this hike will ruin your day. You will also make it miserable for everyone else who has to consistently wait for you. Please do not sign up for this hike unless you are in excellent condition and hike regularly.

I'm planning on driving my red truck. 3 open seats if we put gear in the bed.
