Hike + Climb at Finger Rock

For this classic Tucson hike and climb, we'll head up Finger Rock trail for 3 miles of steep, sometimes slabby, ascent. We'll drop from the east side of the gully to the west, and head back uphill on the purportedly faint route that leads to the base of Finger Rock. We'll then climb Finger Rock, a 5.8 trad/sport climb with major exposure and the (small) possibility of flaking rock. The lower portions of our climb are easy, with the crux ten feet below the top. We will rap down, and hike back out the way we came in. Joe Berry will lead the climb.

You must have: basic climbing gear, 2-3 lt. of water per person, food, and an understanding of what you're getting in to when you sign up! This is an advanced hike + climb.

Mileage: +/- 7.5
Elevation gain: +/- 4000 ft.
Time: 8-10 hours, depending on hiking & climbing speed

The fine print: 1. Hike at your own risk. 2. Climbing is dangerous.

Apparently, Alt Hiking is now unable to send me messages - I've checked my mail preferences and filters and can't find the source of the problem... I will check back here often to see if a spot is availble. Thank you.

I have some extra shoes. I think they are around size 38 or 39. I can bring them if you want to try.

This is a great hike, I just did it. I would recommend plenty of water (at least 4 liters each) and be prepared to hunt around a bit to find the route up from the saddle. I used all of the 4.75 liters I brought - granted, it was July, I had a 37 lb pack (went solo) and it was my first hike in 10 years or so. I imagine y'all are in good shape and water needs vary but still, i'd recommend extra water. Even though I headed right (west) from the saddle campfire area, I still ended up missing the trail and settled for going up finger rock guard. At least I got to sign the book. If you don't have someone who has been there before, it may take extra time to find the right route. Here's my track: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0... As you can see, it took 4 hrs just to get up there with 4377' EG.

Almost forgot: Dorine is welcome to borrow my harness or my spare plus other other climbing gear.

Have fun and take lots of pictures!

Only Nat'l Parks & Wildlife Refuges are shut down, so hiking etc. in a wilderness area shouldn't be an issue this weekend.

Please bring headlamps, everyone, since we are now 8 people. The 4:30 return time is off - no definite return time!
