ANNUAL FALL COLORS HIKE! Basset Peak/Ash Creek Trail Car Camp Weekend

Due to problems last year, please do not assume that you can bring a dog.

Per Sabrina's suggestion to make this an annual event. Here it is! AZ FALL COLORS HIKE! Basset Peak: Ash Creek Trail. It can only be described as spectacular! 2008 Hike

The plan is to meet at our handy Houghton Road/ I-10 location and head out of town. Car camping Saturday night is optional if you only want to day hike and return to town. Please indicate in your R.S.V.P. if you are camping Friday, Saturday or driving back to Tucson.

Plan on an ALL Day outing. The trail head is at 5000', we will have almost 3000' of elevation gain, 10.78 miles round trip . It should take 6 hours. Please dress in layers, bring gloves, hats, windbreakers etc . It's still very warm now, but this hike takes place in November at elevation. We want everyone to be comfortable, please be considerate and be prepared.

Summary: This hike takes you to the top of Basset Peak, the highpoint of the Galiuro Mountains. The hike starts out at 5000 ft in elevation. The trail follows Ash Creek to its headwaters at the bottom of a large basin, which is marked by a lone stand of aspen trees. At this point the trail climbs up and out of the steep walled basin. Once you climbed out of the basin and on to the prominent ridge line you will be at the intersection of the Ash Creek trail, the East Divide Trail, and Basset Peak Trail. Follow Basset Peak Trail for another mile to the summit. There is WW-II B-24 bomber crash site to explore too!

Hike will start at 0830 Saturday morning.

Trail head: From Tucson take I-10 east to Wilcox. Take exit 340, then follow Fort Grant Road north for about 18 miles to its intersection with Ash Creek Rd. Follow Ash Creek Rd west for about 15 miles. This should take us approximately to the intersection of Sunset Rd and Ash Creek Rd.

Here we will need high clearance vehicles to continue up Ash Creek Rd another 2.5 miles to the trail head and parking location. Note that the total hiking distance for this hike is relative to the trail head. (Lat:[masked] Lon:[masked])

Looks like I won't be able to leave til later, can I get a ride only for the high-clearance road by the trailhead? Is there a place to park my car before that?

    November 6

    • Beth S.

:( already changed my plans, I'm still in Tucson. Thanks though!

PMJI. Beth, if you can't make it to this outing, there's room in the Tucson Hiking out-and-back meetup this Sunday. The canyon is always lovely, and the colors should be going well by now.

Truman is a rather portly GSD. He loves people but doesn't care for the company of other K9's. Not to worry as we'll be camping off to the side of everybody and Truman will be sticking close by me. All in all he is very well behaved and a gentle soul.

    November 6

  • Mark

We're planning on leaving Town around 0900 Friday; if you want to meet at Houghton Rd and caravan let me know.

Beth, can ride with me if, if my Toyota highlander makes it. I will leave after the hike or early the next morning. Phone is[masked]-5251. Deep into grandmother ing right now in denver so head not quite around all the details yet

    November 1

    • Beth S.

Thanks Arlene, when are you planning on leaving Friday?

      November 4

  • Bob W.

Mark, I will be attending -- for certain ! However, I could use a ride as my vehicles aren't questionable-road worthy. I have gas money for anyone who could carry me. Early Friday OR Friday 12:00 PM @ Houghton works for me. Feedback please -- Bob

  • Greg C.

Nov 2 report: Maple colors are just getting going, with a few small areas aflame in the upper canyon near the spring and aspen trees. A handful of maples and assorted non-maple yellow foliage sporadically color the lower canyon. The canyon is pretty, but nowhere near peak. Another week might be about right.. Enjoy!

      Thanks Greg !

Expecting son back from Afghanistan in this time period. Better for me to cancel now. So sorry won't make the trip.

Hi everyone, I also need a ride for the dirt road section as I'm pretty sure my Prius won't make it.

    October 31

  • Mike

    Hi,
I just know realized I was moved up from the waitlist. I will have a 4-wheel open bed truck if anyone needs a ride to the site....I can fit gear and people in the back...but only on the bad road section, otherwise I have room for two in the front.

Mike, Do you have room for a rider from Tucson or if not; just for the 4X area?

      October 30

I'm not certain about the weekend. Going to drop to the Wait List. THANKS, Mark, (And Sabrina for goading you on), your Ash campouts make for a great weekend.

I plan to come. Will my toyota highlander make it to the trailhead???

    October 27

Arlene, it should make it, however the road condition is unknown since last year

      October 27

  • Garrison

I'm planning on attending but still need to work out transportation. Does anyone have room for one more person? I have classes at the U of A until 11:00AM Friday but could leave anytime after that

    October 26

  • Richard S.

    Definitely coming, probably early Friday.

    October 26

  • Greg C.

Mark, in reply to this evening's email.
I'm still planning to attend. There is some finite chance I'll have to cover for an currently ill elderly co worker that weekend. If I can't make a reasonably certain determination in the next few days, I'll bail to the waitlist.

    October 26

  • Jennifer M.

I was confirmed for this! Tried to bring a guest and now I'm on the wait list? Guess I should have asked someone first b4 doing so? This really sucks!

    September 14

    • Patty

The best thing to do to avoid these issues, which are beyond the control of the organizer, is to have your guest become a member, even if its for one trip, there is no cost and they can drop themselves when they wish.

      1 · September 14

    • Jennifer M.

Thanks for the advice :)...we'd still be on the waiting list now, tho...oh well, I should of asked before I went and did my +1! Live and learn, I suppose :).

      September 17

  • Patty

I hate missing this but recent events will make it difficult for me to attend...enjoy!

    September 9

  • Mike

I probably missed something in the description above....but is there a charge for the camp site ?

    August 3

    • Alice

No. U just pick a spot and pitch ur tent. No bathroom.

Thanks for the confirm. I'll be there for the day hike. With all that great scenery, I hope we make a lot of stops!

    August 2

  • arlene G.

I am so delighted to be confirmed...excited about going

    July 2

  • Tom

I'd like to go on this trip, but I'm a little confused. Is this a wait list, or do we all get notified at the same time when a spot becomes available and the first person to sign up gets it?

    July 1

    • Tom

Looks good now, appears to be an actual waitlist instead of a "notify list".

      1 · July 1

    • Anna

      Thanks!

      July 1

  • Amy

Mark, if there is still a waitlist come hike time, did you ever consider sending two groups, staggered say 30-45 min apart? I'd be happy to lead one if you wanted to do this. Granted, I've never done this hike… but I've done Wrightson alone and with flying colors! ;)

    1 · July 1

  • Amy

Unbelievable! The second rare instant an awesome hike isn't held at the ass crack of dawn, I get closed out AGAIN! :(

    June 28

  • Greg C.

    LOL, that filled up quick!
