Elephant Head New Years Pilgrimage

Lets begin the new year on a great hike. Ganesha is one of the best-known and most widely worshipped deities in the Hindu religion. Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the Lord of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles. Elephant Head - this is one of my favorite hikes in this area. Here's the stats: Distance: 8.5 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 2800 ft Hike Time: about 6 hours Difficulty: Strenuous Trail Condition: Poor trail HikeType: Out and Back We will be hiking the route up from Agua Caliente Canyon. Bring plenty of water and snacks or a lunch. Don't forget to bring your elephant trinkets or tributes for the memorial at the top. We'll meet at Midvale Medical Center and carpool from there. After hiking uphill for about 2 miles or so there is a deep ravine (5-800') that must be hiked down and then back up. The return is harder. This is a strenous hike and your skill level should be intermediate to advanced. This hike will be at your own risk!

Check your emails. I sent you one last night and I just sent you one today about this. I'm writing this here in case you are not getting these. Also I mistakenly thought you were already on the list for next years.

On that note to Britton, I want to reiterate that this is a difficult hike. If you are not in shape, this hike will hurt. You will also make it difficult for everyone else who has to continually wait for you. Additionally, as found out last year, the trail has really become grown over with pointy things that will really tear up your legs if you wear shorts. I recommend long pants if possible. Also, this is not a bring your dog hike. Thanks for your time.

how does this hike compare to Mt Hopkins Loop as far as difficulty?

    January 1, 2014

    • Vagabond J.

I haven't done that hike but by looking at the description, it's probably very similar in difficulty.

    Hi Everyone,
As this hike has been scheduled and people allowed to sign up almost a year ago, it's time to renew our vows so to speak. If you are receiving this message, it's because you have signed up for this hike. If you are on either the "wait list" or the "going list", please take yourself off of the hike if you do not want to, or can't attend. I can then make a final determination over how many to take on this hike. PS: Can someone on the wait list please tell me if you get an email notification that there have been comments posted for this hike. Thanks.

As much as I had hoped I could do this there is zero possibility my body will be able to complete this. Happy birthday to the New Year, May this one bring continued healing.

Sorry Rosie. I thought it would not be possible this year, but I've been watching your progress on FB. Anyway, we'll have a spot saved for you next year, and know that you'll be with us in spirit. May the new year bring you much healing.

Is my phone not working properly or is there no wait list? Is it possible to make a waiting list since it's so far off and people may have to drop out?

    June 18, 2013

    • Paul Y.

Ellie, I'll sell you my spot for only 3 kizillion space bucks :D

      June 18, 2013

    • Vagabond J.

Kimmieieiei, you can't crash someplace where you are wanted, you silly wabbit! I've loosened the reins on this one so you better sign up before it's too late. And Paul, you're selling that spot way too cheaply. Come December, you could get about 5k's.

      1 · June 18, 2013

  • Kim

Since this hike is full, I am going to crash it.

If you've already signed up and put this on your calendar, note the date change to Saturday the 4th of January instead of Sunday the 5th. As an annual event you have to pick a date but it will generally not be the same day each year.

  • Duane

Ok. I waited 2 hours after the 2013 hike to sign up. Lets go!
