Night Sky Photography (Stars) Trial Run!

From Peter: Had a look at Google Maps and think I might give Grafton Regis a try using the church there as a back drop - (thought a small group of 2~6) would be appropriate due to the remote location and time of visit as we don't want to alarm/frighten the locals with a large group late at night? Once we gain a bit of experience we can try out other, more secluded locations and can open up the group size as the more experienced can help the others?

We would require a clear night, probably on a Friday/Saturday, could try 22:00 hrs on-wards?

See my notes on the Meetup Discussion thread of suggested kit needed.

Obviously, this date is dependent on the weather so may be postponed on the day if not looking promising!

From Gareth: There is no limit to the meet, all Welcome.

Just out of interest what settings was everyone else using on this shoot? Somehow I managed to take 95 photos, which was a surprise when I checked.

Hi Nigel, I was shooting at 15 sec, f/5, ISO-3200 focal length 16 mm for the pics of the church.

Well, I thought the evening was quite interesting - so what did I learn?

I learnt that trying to set up Gareth's Pentax was beyond me :-)

Steve, despite all the cloud cover actually managed a few shots of some stars - well done Steve!

It's easy to bump into black tripod legs in the dark - sorry Nige!

Gareth's LED torch was the brightest I had ever seen :-)

Pat's lens filter and lens hood are well & truly stuck on the front of her lens!

Entrusting someone else to hold the torch invariably means that it wont be shone where you want it lol

The weather, although not perfect, could have been so much worse - I think we made the best of what we had!

Thanks to all for coming along and making the evening fun.

    Take care

    Pete

Others may have heard me swear just a bit each time me or Daisy kicked the tripod, so easily done.

Pete, maybe another night meetup... somewhere overlooking a town or a few extra views... no trial this time, but the real mecoy!

  • Steve W.

Another tip brought to you from YouTube was ... bump the iso to a silly level and quite a fast shutter speed and just take some shots to see what's there. I only discovered where the cloud breaks really were using that method as none of the stars were ones I could actually see. Once we knows what's up there we can knock the settings back to sensible again.

The only sad part for me was not being able to get any foreground to the stars which I could have done if I'd moved but, by the time I'd done that, the gap in the clouds may have gone

Shame about the cloud...but it inspired me to try more night photography

Really enjoyed it, shame about the clouds but interesting all the same

    February 16, 2013

Glad you enjoyed it Steve, it looks like you had a productive evening and actually managed to shot some stars, so well done!

Should anyone need to get hold of me, my number is[masked] ... heading off now to buy a torch! Bringing my daughter along, she needs the fresh air ... that and she's stressed out with the toddler getting out of bed every 5 minutes so she's leaving hubby in charge! Will be away from my PC now and relying on phone

I will be there, might be in a field somewhere chatting to a cow (or horse) because I can't find my torch at the moment. Hmm, a change of shoes may be in order me thinks!

Am travelling from Northampton if anyone needs a lift from this direction?

Hi Guys can't believe I can't make it tonight :( I have pulled a muscle in my back and standing is very uncomfortable to say the least. Especially as it looks like the weather is on side. Have a great time and I look forward to meeting you all in the near future. Mxxx

Colin has just had a hardware failure on his PC so I do not believe he will be going. If anyone lives near New Bradwell (MK130ET) and can give me a lift, please let me know! [masked]

Just checked Accuweather, the evening should start off with around 44% cloud cover but as it gets later that lessens so it should be an OK to getting better clear sky situation. also, to add to the evening, there is 0 chance of any wet stuff ... assuming weather people know anything of course.

I'm completely stumped as to how you can open up a new album for this event - if anyone has any idea please share as I have tried every option that I can think of :-(

Don't forget all your kit & pack a torch & remember there is hardly any parking near the church - its similar to the park & ride schemes without the ride! :-)

The grass verges were sodden, best kept off! Hopefully we will have a dry Friday with a clear cloudless sky in the evening :-) (Not looked at forecast yet!)

Well, this evening I could spot the moon & a number of stars through breaks in the cloud so hopefully tomorrow evening will be even better!

    Hi All,
I have popped over to Grafton Regis this afternoon in the rain to do a recce. I was looking for a remote place in the hope of reducing the amount of light pollution but don't know how successful this location will be in that respect. What I have found is that the road, ( Church Lane?), gets narrower the further down towards the church, with very little in the way of parking. Best to park before the end of the housing on the right prior to the church & if possible share a car!

I took a few pics of the church & road in the vicinity - not much opportunity to pack on the verges this weather as they are sodden. Snowdrops were out on the verge below the church yard.

I will post the pics for you to see, perhaps Colin or Gareth can move them into the Star Shoot folder?

Obviously, be prepared for this to be cancelled or postponed if weather is not kind to us in which case if anyone can come up with a more suitable location that is not too far away, feel free.

    Pete
