Join our exciting new masterclass series for amateur pianists—a first for San Diego! Instruction is given by fellow amateur pianist Gorden Cheng. Gorden is a top-prize winning amateur pianist who has competed in Paris, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Washington, and Warsaw. He is also a member of the Music Teacher's Association of California (MTAC). As a private teacher for over 10 years, his students have passed all MTAC's Certificate of Merit (CM) tests on subjects of theory, technique, ear training, and performance. In addition to music, Gorden works as a systems architect and designs scalable enterprise solutions for the Active Network, Inc.

These masterclasses serve as an important staple to our mission to promote the education and performance of music. The intimate setting provides an enjoyable open-forum discussion and learn how to improve their mastery of the piano. Audience members will not only be able to hear a variety of performed repertoire but also actively engage in discussion with the instructor, student, or even other audience members. There are no intimidating professors; only amateur-to-amateur music lovers.

We accept a maximum of 3 students (subject to repertoire and performance-time availability). Thirty minutes will be devoted to each student and their chosen piece, which can be from any period style (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern). Several people mentioned the tone of the piano. The relatively low ceiling had something to do with this; it was certainly bright in the high register. I forget if the second piano had its lid raised, in this case, it should have been lid closed. I also don't remember if the first piano had its lid full open or partially, some sound engineering might help there. As far as the teaching, the best was the Rachmaninoff. Gordon clearly understood the structure of the student's defect. The Chopin showed an issue with a leaky roof (technique): I don't think the lesson addressed this fully. I thought that the Bach was a little out of place, since it was 80% well prepared, not like an amateur performance at all. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Julian in the future.

As always Gorden's teaching is very good. He is able to hook up the technical understanding with the artistic expression. In so doing he is teaching students the importants of aesthetic interpretation is an essential part of playing music.

Anyone who is a pianist or has participated in a masterclass knows how difficult it can be to be in spotlight or have our weaknesses exposed publicly. We are so lucky to have Gorden willing to teach and share his knowledge, while having others share their homes and instruments. Glenn is always such a gracious organizer! I enjoyed all three lessons so much yesterday and appreciate the performers who played for us themselves on the line. I would urge all of you to attend these meetings with a supportive and positive spirit for the good of all. Namaste!
