The Silk Managers House
I am possibly looking to start a Supper Club at my house here in Belper which is an old 1840's house built for and lived in by your host Mrs Caroline Walker Turner . She was married to Ebenezer Walker Turner the Manager of the Silk Dept at Brettles Mill . You will be invited to arrive in time for a reception drink at 1900hrs with dinner being served at 1915hrs. The dinner will be typical of a menu from 1847 and served accordingly in our period style parlour. Mrs Turner will weave her story of the Silk Managers House and its occupants as you dine and unravel its history across 166 years, incorporating links with Conan Doyle, Pugin and Westminster, Charles Darwin and many local people...some who may visit us ! A fine dressmaker herself, Mrs Turner will be wearing Victorian dress, as you are invited to do so, as it will enrich the evening and make things more authentic.
Supper Clubs run on the premise that diners offer a monetary 'donation' for their evening, at the end of the evening, dependent on their enjoyment of the food, the hosts and ny entertainment. Some supper clubs run on a 'foodie' theme making the event about the preparation and presentation of the food, however, the Silk Managers Supper Club, although you WILL be fed well and heartily, is about the whole evening and in particular the relevance of the story of the house and its history.
Anyway - I think that I should invite Belper Friends to our first Silk Managers Supper !!
Space is very limited and it will be first come - first served (s'cuse the pun !)
