The Shallows by Nicholas Carr

The poll for a non-fiction book choice was a tie so I went with this one...

"In this ground-breaking and compelling book, Nicholas Carr argues that not since Gutenberg invented printing has humanity been exposed to such a mind-altering technology. The Shallows draws on the latest research to show that the Net is literally re-wiring our brains inducing only superficial understanding. As a consequence there are profound changes in the way we live and communicate, remember and socialise - even in our very conception of ourselves.

By moving from the depths of thought to the shallows of distraction, the web, it seems, is actually fostering ignorance. The Shallows is not a manifesto for luddites, nor does it seek to turn back the clock. Rather it is a revelatory reminder of how far the Internet has become enmeshed in our daily existence and is affecting the way we think. This landmark book compels us all to look anew at our dependence on this all-pervasive technology."

(NB I'm pleased to announce we are now offered a 10% discount on our bookclub choices at The English Bookshop, and Liesl confirms she'll order in a few copies, so check first to see if they have arrived.

How was it? Good showing after all? Were you the only girl? Sorry I didn't read it in time to join.

Great discussion guys. Oh wait, just got a new email... ... anyway as I was saying, thanks for all your thoughts on The Shallows. I think we all found it a good read and could apply it to our own experiences. Longer discussion than usual, more about the ideas in the book rather than the writing style in this case, but it was good to try something different and critique a non-fiction book. Another one next year. And let's keep up our book reading , guys, can't let the old ways die out just yet.

Is the first time I will attend a meeting from this group. Could you please let me know how does it work? Do I need to buy the book first or just come and listen?

Yes thanks, Silvia, you buy the book and read it before coming to the meetup. On the night we will discuss the book and what we all thought of it. Look forward to meeting you.

Mmmm I don't think I can buy and read the book before that time. I think I will decline and now I know how does it work for future events.
