Book Club/Discussion: The Self

We often hear the philosophical injunction "Know Thyself" and on occasion we may even stop to consider the nature of the Self.

In order to explore this nebulous concept in more depth we will take a look at two readings. The first is a recent article from The New Scientist entitled The Self: the greatest trick the mind ever played and the second is a chapter from Reuben Abel's book Man is the Measure: A Cordial Invitation to the Central Problems of Philosophy. The chapter is entitled The Person

Questions that may help guide your reading and contemplation are: What is the nature of Self? What factors may enable the continuity of Self? What is the relationship between the body and the Self? and What is the relationship between the Self and society?

Looking forward to an interesting discussion.

    Hi there,

Thanks to the group for an interesting discussion this afternoon, and for being patient with our delayed (but rather funny) exit :-). And to those who would have liked to have been there but were unable to make it - Roelof, Gerbens, Sona, Dick and Adriaan etc., - we hope to see you another time. Gab has kindly offered to host the next meeting on December 8th. It will involve an exploration of some of the ideas of Slavoj Žižek: a Slovenian philosopher and cultural critic. Slavoj Žižek writes on a diverse range of topics that include political theory, film theory, and cultural studies.

More information on what the session involves will follow soon. For now, though, just mark the date of Dec. 8th as being when we will next meet for the Book Club. Between now and then there will also be an informal Philosopher's Cafe. There was a suggestion from the group of a movie that may work for the next one. More information will follow soon.

    Hi all,

The location of Sunday's meetup will be the ABC Treehouse. This is a center that is overseen by to the American Bookstore and it has rentable meeting spaces available. Luckily they had a space free. Seeing as the room needs to be rented please take into account that we will need to provide 4 euros each towards the rental cost. Also given that the meeting rooms are upstairs and the door downstairs needs to be kept locked I'd really appreciate it if we could be there just before 4. I'll be there from 3:30 to set up. The center provides tea and coffee and I'll bring along some snacks. If you'd like to bring along some as well - then the more the merrier :-).

Thinking about that which exist outside the thinking mind can never produce any clarity. No matter how many words we share, in the end only meditation; the practice of making space for nature itself to re-emerge can help solve the problem of the mind which tries to understand itself.

Sounds very interesting and I'd love to attend, but I'll be out of town. Hope to make it next time. All the best.

Hi there. Apologies for the delay in scheduling the next meeting. Writing mid-term reports kept me busier than usual. Thought it might be a good idea to continue on from where we left off last time with a discussion centered on the concept of Self. Looking forward to hearing the different perspectives on the topic. I'm happy to lead the meeting but if somebody else is interested in orienting the discussion then I'm also happy to hand over the reins :-). Send me an email if you are interested. With regards to the location I will check out Hotel V this weekend (as recommended by Tony) and I'll post the location next Monday.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
