Oct 30: Flows and Leadership at Philips Design

Hello there!

Another month, another UX Cocktail Hour! After last month's The Web and Beyond edition at Virtual Affairs, this month's edition features two topics that show the width and breadth of our field:

First, Reinoud Bosman (creative lead UX & mobile at our hosts, Philips Design) will talk about and, more importantly, show us the way Philips documents design research in the shape of massive UX Flows (think 3 meter wide customer journey maps).

Then, Will Evans (experience design director at Semantic Foundry in New York, http://semanticfoundry.com) will discuss UX Leadership. He will argue that by seeing the common gap between our work and executive decisions as a design problem that can be fixed, we can develop strategies of influence. Rhetorical techniques such as context, perception, posture, situation, and framing will be referenced by Will while he explains a framework for thinking about UX Leadership.

At this event, there will be drinks & snacks and security.
I am happy to mention the first two since they allow for the human behaviour that makes these events the social events they are intended to be.
But I also have to mention the last one since it means that --> only people whose names are on the attendee list will be allowed in by the Philips security forces <--. This is not an event to bring a friend and assume you will both be allowed in! Of course, this also means I would prefer it if you could make sure you can absolutely, definitely make it to the event on Tuesday, October 30th, before you RSVP with "yes". We have room for about 50 of you.

So, here's the lowdown:

The talk by @SemanticWill was definitely the highlight of the evening and I would have liked to see and hear more in-depth on ways we as designers can influence a company's ability to communicate internally and innovate.

Philips' talk was somewhat disappointing to me. It was lacking detail explaining the process behind creating these things and the strategy they employ when solving these problems. I can understand how it can be beneficial to an organisation, but it wasn't communicated very clearly.

SemanticWill's presentation was very interesting. The rest of the evening rather mediocre.

Good talks. Liked the idea of the experience flows. Will Evans also interesting but sometimes a bit too fast. Nice that there was a common theme: influencing your internal stakeholders.

Will's talk will definitely be in English, and I am sure Reinoud will be happy to do the same.

I will definitely be speaking American English - peppered with a healthy dose of cursing and ranting.
