LATEST: Meetups to be scheduled soon (next couple of weeks), probably every 2-4 weeks, probably late afternoon on Saturdays (~2pm), probably a center city coffee shop, possibly university city/west philly ~34th-45th, possibly south philly ~8th and Christian-ish. Please message me through the meetup interface with suggestions and preferences.
This group is for deeply analytical people who are simultaneously, actively engaged in some sort of contemplative path (e.g. Vipassana, Zazen, etc.) and some sort of psychological path (e.g. psychotherapy, Focusing [link], etc.).
You've caught at least a taste of so-called "emptiness," "voidness," Śūnyatā [link], etc. And, you've experienced the pain/relief of facing, accepting, opening to, articulating, or allowing scary things within or about yourself to come forth when you hadn't been able to before.
You are constitutionally unable to accept anything on faith, and you're always thinking, reading, pondering, and synthesizing. And you're really unapologetic about doing just as much reading and thinking as actual doing (meditating, etc.).
I'm imagining sort of a study group: We'll pick a book chapter to read before meeting, and then go off on lively, irreverent tangents in a coffeeshop.
(About the organizer: I've put in a decent amount of time and experienced things that certainly other people have experienced too, and I'm working towards experiencing other things and relating to the world in different ways, and it would be great for some of us to get together so we can learn from and argue with each other. Hundreds of books read about Buddhism, meditation, psychotherapy, psychology, philosophy, etc. Nine years of sporadic meditation; meditating regularly now. Regularly do journaling/emotional/meaning/etc.-type practices and have done psychotherapy on and off. Not a licensed mental health professional or anything like that. Not enlightened. Not authorized to teach meditation in any contemplative lineage. Not a Buddhist. Not starting a cult. Etc.)
UPDATE: I'm changing the requirements a little bit from the above description. New requirements: No prior experience needed, just current experience/exploring/experimenting. So if, for example, every couple of days you're following your breath (or something) for 5-15 minutes, then you are welcome at the meetups. (Stated differently, pick a practice, any practice, and be doing it regularly, and it's ok to switch whenever you want.) Basically, I want everyone to be grounded in (wrestling with) personal direct experience in addition to the reading and discussing.
[Please note: Meetup.com has a new policy where they change the "We're about" topics in the sidebar. If you see something silly or new-agey over there, please ignore it. It wasn't me. I keep changing them back when I see it happen, and I'm complaining to them about it.]
