From Tufte to the Magic Kingdom: Telling the Story Behind the Data

"From Tufte to the Magic Kingdom:  How to use visual elements and storytelling to keep your audience awake."

A Neuroscience Ph.D & quantitative analyst who communicates like a TED talk presenter?

Join us for a talk by Ms. Sterling Walker, an unusual guest who checks both those boxes!

Sterling has volunteered to present on the topic of data visualization, storytelling, and best practices in turning data-driven insights into understanding. Sterling will draw on her experience as a New York comedian and all-around nerd to discuss how narrative and graphical elements can be used to increase audience understanding of quantitative data, and how a memorable presentation is crafted like a theme park =)

About Sterling: Breset "Sterling" Walker, Ph.D. has been over-educated both in Berkeley, California and New York City. Finding her day career of medical research insufficiently hilarious, she started performing improv comedy, and stopped inviting her coworkers when they suggested she rehearse her lines more.

I thought about this. A presentation, as opposed to a working meeting, is a lot like a theme park. The attendees are suspending their regular activity, giving up control to the presenter and expecting to be guided with cues, as Sterling pointed out.

Excellent meetup. The Q&A afterwards was as thought-provoking and informative as the presentation itself.

Hi Todd and Rafael -- yes, we finally got a larger space. We cleared the 30+ off the waiting list, and have 10 more spots left :-)
