This coming Wednesday, our topic will be how to awaken gratitude
in the heart- regardless of what's going on around us. Yoga teaches that we always have the power to turn on the "spotlight" within and reap the benefits of inner strength and, yes, joy at the center of each of us. One way of looking at this is by peeling off "layers artichoke-like" of layers of conditioned thoughts, we can get to the "heart" of our innate being. The holidays can bring out the best and worst in many of us and these priceless teachings and techniques of the great yogis are needed now, if not more, than they were thousands of years ago. It may sound corny, but meditation practice is also a great ally to remember and participate in "the reason for the season."
I have often found that my heart's awareness and capacity for happiness opens and closes, like a camera lens, to the extent that I am willing to focus on the positive things in my life. This is not escapism or ignoring other painful realities- rather, like using a camera, it's deciding what subjects I want to put my mind's focus on... and what ever I zero in on over time, of-course, expands! It's not always easy- but in the end, it's been (and still is) a transformative journey and always worth the effort.Enough pep talk, hope to see you this Wed or sometime soon!
