Have a quad-copter fly-in

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • I'm suggesting this meetup without a date or location because I'm not sure how many members have quad (or hex or octo.) copters. If you have one and would like to get together with other members, just to see who can do the best crashes, please leave a comment below. (Crashing not mandatory.)

Little off topic: I am coming down to Anchorage for the weekend and am planning to fly my mini-quad (Proto X FPV).

I was wondering if anyone would like to meet up to do some flying, what are some good downtown flying locations, and what are restrictions I should keep in mind?

    Thanks!

Hey Juaquine! I've not flown downtown, but my friend has at the Delaney parkstrip. Sometimes there are kites to share the space with. If you can, try going to the RC park on the oppsite side of town. It's at the end of C st off Klatt. Big open space and its recessed enough you even fly on windy says.

Technically both locations are no-nos because they're within 5 miles of airports, however the RC park has two tall cellular towers so no airplanes fly low there. Id stay below tree line at Delney bc they sometimes get overhead small engine planes commuting through the airspace.

Dan, I think it would be a big help to have a bill of materials for the electronics hardware for an entry level quad copter and rc plane. Would you consider getting together at a coffee shop or somewhere to start on a document we could share online?

I think that would be a great idea. I have a midterm in every class this week so I won't be available, but after that I should be pretty free.

the weather forcast i'm looking at says its not gonna rain for about 6 hours saturday afternoon. so if its nice i'll probably go fly around 12:30. I usually fly at balto sepalla park on turnagain, but i'm open to suggestions.

Sounds like fun. I personally won't fly if I do go. That park is too close air traffic. I've got my lipos charged for a flying at some point this weekend. Maybe I'll catch you all at Balto Sepalla to say hello.

Hey all I picked up a 3D Robotics Iris with gimbal. I've mostly been learning on it and getting familiar with the entire ground station process. Most my flight hours are from Proto X and a regular schedule of flying weekly. I'd love to meet up with other Arducopter based flyers, and learn tips from any long time pilots.

Oscar, when and where do you fly? Let me know when you plan to go out again or you could just schedule it as a meetup and see who shows up.

I'm logging about an hour a week. Mostly in my backyard practicing navigating objects and turning from different pov. If I'm gonna fly higher than 7', I go to the East high soccer field but now that school has started I'm looking at going to the RC range park.

I'd be rad to do meet up at the RC park on C street. I've only got about 35min of max flying time between two batteries. Weekend would definitely work best for me. Hopefully theres someone else in the group here that has an APM based quad. I'd love to pick their brain for the next bird I have planned.

mine is also in disrepair, i need to print some new arms (i let a friend try to fly), but that shouldn't take long. i usually fly at balto sappala park on Wisconsin street, pretty big and open. i also saw a guy flying his at cuddy midtown park.

Dan, have you got a suggestion for when and where. I'm not going anywhere this weekend. My copter is damaged but I think I have the parts to fix it.

This meetup has been on hold for quite a while. Now that it's warming up outside we should think about getting this meetup off the ground. Any suggestions for a place to hold it that's relatively obstacle free and maybe even sheltered from too much wind?

I got a little micro quad for myself on Xmas. It's pretty small but performs very nice. I'm still learning. I'd like to hear some tips on flying from others.
