Johnson Pass--23 Mile Fast Hike (+ slow run?)

Let's cross this one off the list for the summer! This will require at least two cars. Arrangements all depend on how many people are interested, so we'll determine this later. If there's an interest, we could create a second group for those wanting to go slower (or faster).

23 mile multi-use trail from mile 64 Seward Highway in the north to mile 32.5 Seward Highway in the south. Trail is mostly forested for the first 4 miles on the north end and first 10 miles on the south end. The higher middle section is mostly open subalpine terrain of meadows and brushy areas with views of nearby mountains. Elevation gains are gradual with a few steep sections.

Great day out. 4 of us did 23+ miles in 8.5 hours. The trail was in great condition, views were spectacular, good company and conversation. Thanks guys and Kenton for organizing.

Fast hike, slow run works for me. Just want to make sure we stay together as a group. I am a bit of a wimp, when it comes to bear country.

That won't be a problem! I'm bringing my large day pack, planning on being out there for 12 hours, just in case. I'll have water-purification tablets, and room for other people's stuff if they're interested. We'll just be hiking quickly, so don't worry about running. I'll also bring bear spray. And mosquito repellent. And extra food.

Alright, so now it's time to discuss. As of now, it looks like Jan, Elizabeth, myself, and (possibly) Pilar are hiking this quickly on Saturday. If we plan on 20 minute miles with any breaks included, that turns this into an 11 hour trip for us.

James and Mike...what do you guys think? If we meet at the closest Trailhead at 9, and you guys drive my car down to the farther trailhead, you pass my keys off when we run into each other on the trail? (If we get more people signed up last minute for the hiking group, I'd be happy shifting over to the running group as well)

Anything else you guys would like to discuss?

OK, let's all plan to depart Carrs Huffman AT 7:45am. Then two vehicles will drive down to the first Johnson Pass Trailhead. Then Mike and James will drive my vehicle down to the southern trailhead. I'll bring my second car key just in case we for some reason miss eachother.

Sounds perfect. I will see you at 7:45am at Carr Huffman

Would a 9:00am start be too early?

9 is fine with me... 8 seems a little early. That said, I do need to be back by 6:00 at the latest. That means I can drive, but might not be able to take anyone back to the other end when we're done.

I changed it up for 9am.

I would love to run the trail if there is a sub-group who is looking to go faster than a fast hike. I did speak with the USFS Seward Ranger District yesterday; the trail is in great condition, with brushing work completed recently.

If my "fast hike" subgroup doesn't materialize, I'd be happy to join you guys :) I've received interest from a dozen or so meetup peoples, but none of them have signed up yet, so we'll see what happens in the last few days!

Kenton/James - I'm a regular runner, but not necessarily a pace runner. If I had to guess, I'd say my pace is 8-12 mins/mile. Six hours is a good goal. Stopping for vistas and water is a must! We'll figure out the details this week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

I am new to meetup so I am unsure of the protocol(s). Normally I work weekends but I happen to be off on the 17th so I'll join the hikers. I'm recovering from a quad injury so running is still out of the question. I'm in good enough shape to do this hike (did 20 miles 2 weeks ago in 8 hours) but will need guideance on travel/car arrangements.

I actually am free that day and would run it with James and/or anyone else.

Hmmm I'd love to do this, but being one week after Res Pass I don't think I will be recovered enough yet!

I nice fast hike is great to work out the fatigue in your legs :)

I would love to do this, but not sure about my ability to slow run 22 miles. a hike maybe? how many hours do you think it is going to take?

    August 5, 2013

    • Kenton C.

I'm just going to expect 12 hours for the hiking group. If we go faster than that, then we can subtract from that! But yes, I'm planning on simply making this a fast hike.

Oooh, I really would like to do this if there ends up being a group for just hiking....I believe I can do 23 miles that way (I will only be up to a 12 mi LR on that wkd, but I am a slowww runner like a 13 min mi on my LR's.) Even though I am not THE fastest hiker either, this distance is way more doable for me on a hike. This would be an awesome thing for me to get to do on my bday :)! Not sure if I will have to work or not tho, will know for sure later.
