Kesugi Ridge Trail #2

  • Sep 22, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • Byers Lake

This is the second promised Kesugi meetup for folks that couldn't make it earlier. Arrangements all depend on how many people are interested, so we'll determine later. If there's an interest, we can run or hike parts of the trail as well.

Depending on everyone's thoughts, we could camp the night before and try to knock out the whole thing, or we could go up early and do part of the trail. Either way sounds like fun.

As a starter, 8/21 and 8/28 are looking pretty good, with 8/21 being the better option for me, since it will start getting pretty chilly there as we get later in the year!

Here are maps for both north and south portions of the ridge:

It seems it was not meant to be, so I am pulling out.

Or you could run with the anchorage adventurers group tomorrow morning, which is meeting at Indian to hike to power line pass

Mchugh peak (not main mchugh trail) to rabbit lake then over to rabbit lake trail and back via subdivision roads could be fun. Thats about 12 miles? Id probably go mid-day, weather depending. The ridge is pretty exposed, but is only about three miles long.

I feel ill-prepared for this...what do you bring to a 9-12 hour run that's a 3 hour drive away when it's 18 degrees outside? I'd typically just bring a whole bunch of supplies and extra gear and clothes just in case, but that'd involve a big backpack, and I can't exactly run with a big backpack. I'm thinking I'm going to stick closer to Anchorage. Sorry, I figured it'd be a bit warmer in mid-September then it is!

ditto, and I have a badly swollen ankle all of a sudden. Have fun and be safe whatever you do.

Sooo... since a solid plan hasn't materialized yet, I will bow out as well. I'm kinda busy this evening (and Sunday), and I don't really want to make a last-second decision in the morning. My primary goal in doing Kesugi again was to actually see Denali, but it's a good bet that the mountain will still be there next year.

Hey all, I got pulled up for last minute work on the slope Weds and it keeps getting extended. It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it back to town until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest and maybe not until Sunday night. Given that schedule uncertainty, I should probably bow out of hosting this meetup. I'm really really sorry! Yall should still go, just don't count on me to be there!

Also, Zach, I'm a little fearful about the withdrawal symptoms you might experience after not hiking Kesugi for the third weekend in a row...

So, I'm looking at the weather and wondering if it might be a better idea to try doing the north half of the trail on just Saturday. Like drive up Saturday AM, run / hike the 15 mile north half, then drive back Saturday PM.

KTUU weather is showing a 60% chance of snow (and 30 degrees!) in Cantwell right now for Sunday, but only 30% (and 40 degrees) on Saturday.

I'm open to Sunday if lots of folks still prefer that, I'm just not super thrilled about getting rained or snowed on again! Either way, I'm OK with driving a carpool and having folks park at my place so your cars aren't spending the day (or day and night) at a grocery store parking lot. Thoughts?

    September 19, 2013

    • Mike M

If we do a 1-day option on Saturday, I'd be willing to run the opposite direction so we have a vehicle at both ends. I'd also be in for an out-and-back from the north end to the Ermine Hill Trail, which I think would be ~24 miles.

      September 20, 2013

    • Mike M

I'll correct myself. An out-and-back to Ermine is probably still close to 30 miles. Maybe out-and-back to Ten Mile Tarn?

If the weather is crappy at Kesugi this weekend, is anyone interested in doing something else, in/outside the Valley, on Sunday? Symphony Lakes in Eagle River is an option, although I'm totally unfamiliar with this trail. Other ideas?

    September 19, 2013

    • Amy S.

We were talking about that option during last night's run. We can do My husband would join Sunday and is very familiar.

      September 19, 2013

    • Meredyth

Can we touch base tomorrow when the forecast is a little more settled? I'm already going to be out in the Valley on Saturday and am tempted to camp overnight and do a long bike ride on Sunday north out of Talkeetna. Unless it's raining...

      September 20, 2013

  • Meredyth

I am out for this. Can't do Saturday and Sunday is looking too cold! Have fun!

    September 20, 2013

  • Mariah S.

I can't make it, have fun!

OK, it sounds like there are a few folks interested... I've updated the date to show hiking / running starting the morning of 8/22 since that seems to work well for some... what do y'all think?

    September 16, 2013

    • Betsy B

I'll have to see how I feel after equinox, but I'm tempted!

      September 19, 2013

    • Nicole L

Will we be carpooling? I will be in talkeetna at suvalley high on Saturday so would be happy to try and meet up with you guys

      September 19, 2013

  • Meredyth

Is there anyone looking to camp Saturday night (21st) and do the hike on Sunday (the 22nd)? Also, since repeating something expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, who wants to join me on Sunday and just hike/"run" the 15 miles and then cut off the main ridge trail for the 3 mile hike to the Ptarmigan trailhead? Alternatively, anyone want to start at Ptarmigan and trek to Byer's from there? (Car logistics can be figured out)

    September 15, 2013

    • Mariah S.

Pilar, I am definitely one of the slowest, so you don't have to worry about being alone in the back. That's usually my place :)

      September 17, 2013

    • Nicole L

I would be interested in camping Saturday night then doing the whole hike Sunday. I'll be at su valley Saturday so would need to find a way to meet up

      September 18, 2013

  • James

I can't attend on the 28th (is the Kenai Marathon) but can on the 21st. Camping on site the night before works for me if that's the preferred option.

The weekend of the 21st works for me as well. I have plans the other two remaining weekends this month. Early October would be fine too.

      September 7, 2013

    • Taylor

im in for early october, too, or the 21

      September 14, 2013

  • Taylor

any date we are going to do this? i cant the weekend of the 28!!!

    September 14, 2013

  • Mike M

Zach - as your friend, I may have to intervene here. I'm not sure I can let you do this trail three times in the same month!

    1 · September 10, 2013

    • Zach

But but the website says 30% chance of getting a good view. I hope that percentage is accurate!

      1 · September 11, 2013

  • Kenton C.

I can do this whenever, but I'd prefer it if you'd plan this for a completely clear day with a view of the Mountain. Thanks :)

    3 · September 10, 2013

  • Taylor

anyone doing equinox? isnt it the 28?

    September 8, 2013

  • Pilar

Definitely interested. How did it go on last time you guys did it. I would be game for anything. 21st looks good to me too.

    September 6, 2013

    • Zach

It went well, it was pretty long, but the trail was well marked. Even in the wet and clouds, the scenery was really awesome.
