  • I'd prefer to do this on Sunday, but the weather forecast favors Saturday. If the weather ends up bad, this may be postponed a day.

This is all knew terrain for me, but I've heard good reviews! Click on the link above to see a map of the closest location to the Ptarmigan Valley Trailhead I could find (the parking lot is right next door).

I plan to wear running shoes, but the official trail terminates 4-5 miles up at about 3,000 feet elevation, so I'm not planning on running this one, but making it a faster-paced hike. Depending on conditions, it'd be nice to see how far up Blacktail Ptarmigan Rocks we can get! (4,350 ft elevation).

    (Limited) Trail info:

I don't push through my comfort zone when it comes to safety. Feel free to turn around wherever you would like! If you plan on summiting, Kahtoolas and gators would be a good idea. *All snow in the mountains right now is glazed ice. This may change by this weekend, but expect this. Snowline is at roughly 3,000ft right now. This means you can still get an 8-10 mile hike in without hitting the snow.

It's a 30 minute drive from downtown Anchorage. I plan on leaving at roughly 9:15am. If anyone wants a ride (Sullivan Arena area) and doesn't have major Sunday time constraints, or doesn't mind carpooling back with others, I'd be more than happy to bring you along!

I'm not even sure what to do yet. Wolverine Peak? Willawa Lakes? decide for me :)

Kenton, if you're interested in getting a small group together to do the sand flat around to Seattle Creek, here's a map:

    and here's a representative photo:

FYI - I've only been out the first mile or so. The rest is purely speculative, though should be a great run.
