Ptarmigan Valley Trail (Chugiak) 10-12 Mile Roundtrip, Faster-Paced-Hike

(Click link above for map to trailhead)

I'd prefer to do this on Sunday, but the weather forecast favors Saturday. If the weather ends up bad, this may be postponed a day.

This is all knew terrain for me, but I've heard good reviews! Click on the link above to see a map of the closest location to the Ptarmigan Valley Trailhead I could find (the parking lot is right next door).
I plan to wear running shoes, but the official trail terminates 4-5 miles up at about 3,000 feet elevation, so I'm not planning on running this one (James says in the discussion section below that it's runnable, however), but making it a faster-paced hike. Depending on conditions, it'd be nice to see how far up Blacktail Ptarmigan Rocks we can get! (4,350 ft elevation).

Feel free to turn around wherever you would like! If you plan on summiting, Kahtoolas and gators would be a good idea. Snowline is at roughly 3,000ft right now. This means you can still get an 8-10 mile hike in without hitting the snow.

It's a 30 minute drive from downtown Anchorage. I plan on leaving at roughly 9:15am. If anyone wants a ride (Sullivan Arena area) and doesn't have major Sunday time constraints, or doesn't mind carpooling back with others, I'd be more than happy to bring you along!

It was great to experience a new trail for a second week in a row. This trail was awesome, love the tall grass, and rolling hills that lead us to a rocky, snowy and steeper summit. Had a bast!

Kenton, this is a great trail, and can easily be run for the first half or more, as it follows an older cat trail that is 4 to 6 feet wide.

Additionally, you can find more information (in depth) about Chugach Trails in the CSP Trails Management Plan here: http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/trailmgmtplan.htm

And more about legal access here:
    http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/chugachaccess.htm

My favorite trail in this area is Peters Creek Valley Trail AKA Little Peters Creek Trail. It's a great running route for the first five miles in. A good description of the route can be found here: http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/chugachaccess.htm

That's confusing...the Ptarmigan Valley Trail on my Chugach State Park map follows Little Peters Creek the whole way to its headwaters. Also, that map above shows Mt. Eklutna south of Peters Creek Trailhead, whereas the Chugach State Park map shows Mt. Eklutna north of Peters Creek Trailhead. Crazy DNR people...who works at that place anyway?? :)
