New Years Eve on Flat Top

UPDATE:

The fireworks downtown start at 8pm. Still, there are random (illegal) fireworks going off in south anchorage all night, and it's still fun to bring in the new year on top of a mountain!

So...that leaves you with two pre-Flat Top options

1) Meet downtown for the fireworks. There will be live music etc.

OR

2) 7:30 potluck dinner at Eryn's house. This also serves as motivation and peer pressure for the later hike. If interested, I'm creating a separate event for this. We'll head out around 9:30pm

Of course, you don't need to do either of these, and you can meet us just after 10 at Glen Alps.

Be advised this is a potentially dangerous activity, and you should know your own limits. There are two lower peaks below the summit which will be easier to summit than Flat Top itself, so there are backup plans. Be prepared, bring whatever you want that will make the night more enjoyable, and know that you take responsibility for your own actions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We did this last New Years Eve during a blizzard, and it was still really cool looking down at the barely-visible fireworks throughout the city. Hopefully the weather will be better this time!
We plan on being up at Glen Alps around 10ish, and starting no later than 10:15pm. Hoping to get all the way to the top, but if the conditions are particularly bad, making it up to the Second Knob would be fine. We'll be off the top heading down at exactly midnight, or slightly before. Kahtoolas/Crampons are very important, as everything can get icy/windblown. Expect strong winds, snow, potentially sub-zero temperatures, and a new years eve that is slightly different than you're used to!
We can also meet up for food/drinks beforehand, if anyone has input. If you have any thoughts/suggestions please feel free to include them.
Don't forget headlights!
    Found a glove from the New Year Flat Top climb. Anyone missing a glove?
    AMAZING. Best new years ever. But no thank you to ever trying to come down flattop in a blizzard at night again!
      As crazy as I (still) think you people are for doing this, I will admit to a little sadness at not joining the adventure. Such cool pics and I bet it was really something special! Great idea, Kenton!
    The weather station at the parking lot just indicated a jump to something around 31 to 33 degrees, and a wind shift up to about 10 miles out of the south east. http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=61.169201&lon=-149.844299&zoom=10&wxsn=1 Good conditions over all, not terribly cold.
    For what it's worth, I believe the downtown fireworks are at 8:00pm... but maybe there are other displays to see.
      That makes sense. I wondered if maybe the downtown display is what we were trying to see. The potluck is a good idea!
      It would be cool to see, but i think being up on top to bring in the new year beats an 8pm summit...and we would get the whole mtn to ourselves no doubt
    I just went all the way to peak three yesterday without kahtoolas. Just good boots and downhill poles.
    I'd like to come but wondered if anyone had some extra Kahtoolas/Crampons I could borrow for the evening??
