Pi Day Run and Pi-Luck

  • March 14, 2014 · 6:15 PM

MOST RECENT UPDATE:

Nicole and Kenton have granted me permission to take this event over for the sake of logistics, so here's the scoop:

Meet at 1401 W 23rd Avenue - my house, look for the half-strand of colored Christmas lights on the porch - at 6:15pm on Friday. We will depart for a "pi" mile out and "pi" mile back run on either the Coastal Trail or Chester Creek at 6:28pm sharp. Majority rule and perhaps wind gusts will decide the direction.

After the run, we can hang out at my house, make some pizza (pies) for dinner, indulge on pie samplings for dessert, play games (if desired, someone will need to provide Cards Against Humanity), do whatever.

Those staying for the culinary festivities or merely coming for the festivities - you don't have to run and can invite non-runner friends - PLEASE BRING either an actual pie or some pizza toppings. I will supply pizza dough (unless our Arch Duke of Pizza, Mike, wants to step in?), an apple pie, and possibly also ice cream. To eliminate redundancies, how about posting in the comments what toppings and/or pie you plan to contribute.

If you're grossed out by sitting around in sweaty running gear as I am, feel free to bring a change of clothes. Make yourself at home! Also happy to loan my shower, which happens to have the best water pressure in Alaska, according to many sources. Seriously not kidding.

INITIAL PLANS:

We'll start running at Westchester Lagoon in the far west parking lot by the playground at 6:28pm (2π), for 6.28 miles roundtrip (just past Earthquake park). Afterwards we can get pizza (pies) downtown, and pie afterwards?

It was wonderful to meet everyone! Pi-liscious!
And way to tear it up on the snowy trails!

Hey Wynne, Great run, fun party, and super to meet you. Actually, I'd like to get back in touch with your husband, we talked some work at the party, and I need to get in touch with him! Thanks,

Nice pace through a late season snowstorm! Good job to all who made the run!

3.14 was Davenport Fields (directly east of Lake Otis). We ran something like 3.73 out, or 7.45. Happy pi day, plus toppings.

    Anything else I can bring?

    March 14, 2014

    • Meredyth

We can almost certainly make use of random veggies or other pizza-worthy items you'd like to clear from your fridge. If the past at all predicts the future, the pizzas created tonight will be covered in random yet delicious combinations of toppings.

I'm bringing some pesto, chicken and some other stuff...

      March 14, 2014

  • Holly P.

Anyone passing through downtown? I could use a ride over from work (corner of 8th and A)

    March 14, 2014

    • Meredyth

      Overachiever.

      March 14, 2014

    • Chelsea R.

I can grab you, Holly! I'm coming from the courthouse. I drive a little ford fiesta, it's silver. Will you be outside or will I need to call you? My number is[masked] if you could text me that would be great!

I can bring a few more things of dough and cheese.. sounds like we need more. If there's something else I should bring, just let me know!

    1 · March 14, 2014

Okay, you're officially on the hook for dough and cheese! Thanks!

I'm joining no matter where we run. Just let me know where we're meeting.

    • Meredyth

Are you clear on everyone meeting at my house/the currently posted event location?

      March 14, 2014

  • Greg

I'm confused, where are we meeting for the run? I got lost in all of the pi dialog. I've been planning on making a veggie pie of spinach, butternut squash, and goat cheese with sage and pine nuts, have all the stuff so I'll bring that. You good on crust?

    March 14, 2014

    • Kenton C.

Greg, the address is listed in the location. Click on the title to get a map to meredyths house

    • Meredyth

If you want to bring another round of dough, it probably wouldn't hurt! But if you're not going by the store anyway, don't worry about it. (Those toppings sound great!!)

      March 14, 2014

  • Jessica T.

I will bring some BBQ sauce and chicken and green peppers and perhaps a fancy pie out of the freezer section of Freddy's lol. And I'll prob just come for the Pi activities and do a workout before hand! Too icy!!

    1 · March 14, 2014

    • Meredyth

Can you bring my sunglasses too? And maybe also the pint of Hagen Daaz and coffee porter I think I left in your fridge?! (Unless they have been consumed, which is totally fair game after a couple of weeks.)

      March 14, 2014

  • Thao L.

I am bringing artichoke heart, cheese, and tomatoes, and brocolini...

and a couple of friends if they decide to commit.

      March 14, 2014

These comments are (pi)fect, except for Eryn's bit about missing out. Since there is now kind of a crowd coming, I'm predicting a pizza shortage. We only have 3 pizzas versus 8 pies. If folks can focus on pizza toppings, that might make for a more nutritious pi-luck :) Also: The walkway up to my house is basically an ice slide. There are a few stairs underneath the sheet of ice by the fence, I promise, but they are currently hibernating. Be VERY careful walking to the front door. Consider it a test for the run!

    March 14, 2014

  • Andrew D.

Hi all, I'm new to trail running and this sounds like a lot of fun! Are newbie's welcome?
I think I can grind out a full 2pi, but leave me for dead if I'm going too slow/need to cut it short! =)

    March 13, 2014

    • Meredyth

You're absolutely welcome! This will be a tasty AND hazardous first run - double the fun!

      March 13, 2014

    • Andrew D.

      sounds perfect!

      March 14, 2014

  • Kenton C.

Being short on time, I will test out one of the fancy pies from that new pie bakery on Minnesota/Northern Lights!

    March 13, 2014

    • Meredyth

I think we can use another round of dough and some pepperoni from Carrs if that's easier? Almost certainly cheaper...

      March 14, 2014

  • Eryn R

I just have to note that this sounds so fun and i wish i could come

    1 · March 13, 2014

I'll bring some sausage and olives!

I'm all about toppings! How bout I bring s[pi]nach mushrooms and whipped cream... To be used separately or together?

    2 · March 13, 2014

  • Holly P.

Making a pumpkin pie and a banana pistachio pie to bring. Also bringing my non-running roommates to partake in the pi festivities

    2 · March 13, 2014

  • Meredyth

We are proceeding as planned - meet at my house at 6:15ish. Run route and distance will be duked out then. (My street is literally a sheet of ice, as are both hills leading to the lagoon, yikes.) Excellent chance I will spearhead a "pi" distance group; I cannot risk injury. Regardless, sweet and savory pi(es) will most definitely still happen after the run. Post what you're bringing. I have dough, sauce, and cheese. Other toppings (meat?!) needed and appreciated.

    March 13, 2014

    • Kenton C.

I will meet you at said time and be part of 2 pi group! Be sure to bring Micros"PI"kes !

      2 · March 13, 2014

    • Meredyth

Also, for those looking to just im"pi"be with pi(es) and not run, come on over around 7:45. All sweaty folks should be back by then.

      March 13, 2014

  • Nicole L

I'd say we can handle the ice if we come prepared in cleats/ice bugs/some type of metal screws. It would be great to stick with the plan of meeting afterwards for games and pie if you're still up for that meredyth for your house! If not my place is available too

    2 · March 13, 2014

  • Chelsea R.

I ran on the coastal trail yesterday; it's a little icy but I was fine with my skinny raven screws.

    March 13, 2014

  • Debbie M.

Great idea.. Love it! But out of town. definitely, worth doing again.

    1 · March 13, 2014

  • Nicole L

yay this sounds like a blast! I'll bring some G-rated games with me :) and healthy toppings/sides of course! Will raid the house to see what I can come up with

    1 · March 12, 2014

    • Meredyth

I would not be upset if we did not play cards against humanity...

      March 13, 2014

  • Meredyth

Not sure who's been out on either coastal or Chester creek, but conditions are very bad. Trails are ice rinks and, I think, dangerous. If we still want to run tomorrow and don't suddenly get a bunch of snow, we might need to turn this into a road run through Turnagain...roads are actually mostly ice free. We might also need to shorten the distance simply to pi rather than pi x 2. Another thought is simply to go run at the Dome and get pizza somewhere. Not as scenic but certainly safer.

    March 13, 2014

  • Meredyth

I will also donate my home as a Pi(e) stop. I live at the top of the big hill going down to Westchester Lagoon (23rd and Romig). Everyone can bring pies and/or pizza toppings to my house (I can facilitate the crusts), we can run 3.14 miles out on the Coastal Trail or Chester Creek Trail, run back, decorate some pizza (pies), eat other pies, play games, etc. More than happy to host! I just suggest we make it a "pieluck" dinner.

Sounds like a pifectly good time, but I have to work at our annual conference fri &sat.

    March 8, 2014

Dont be so pious about conferences!

      March 12, 2014

This exchange makes me want to gouge my pies out.

Wait hold up. This is the friday before st pat day. Does this mean I can run in my beer bottle costume and pre-celebrate I mean who can really celebrate st pats day when its a Monday?

    March 8, 2014

    • Nicole L

      Do it Jessica!

      March 10, 2014

    • Meredyth

This is Alaska. Why do you need an excuse to run around in a beer costume?

      1 · March 12, 2014

  • Abe

Is there a shortcut anywhere where I can get just a pi run?

    March 10, 2014

  • Nicole L

Or we could start the run about 6 miles up the trail from Earthquake park and run to my house for a secret pie? :) So starting along the chester creek trail perhaps near the Lake Otis tunnel?
