Kenai Overnight

The best cabin ever, Barber Cabin on the Kenai just up from Cooper Landing, is already booked and ready to go for Friday Feb. 14. I'll be heading down after work and skiing in with a headlamp; it's an easy ~3 miles that can be snowshoed or cross country skied. If anyone wants to head down earlier in the daylight, that's an option. I've got some light-up Bocci balls for the frozen lake out front, and dance parties have been known to happen! You'd need to bring sleeping materials and food, but there's a lovely wood stove and platform bunks.

Hi! I would love to join too if there is still room for another. I don't get out of work until 4pm though - is anyone carpooling around that time or later in the evening?

    February 13, 2014

    • Sarah J.

Hi, Kim! Do you have a winter tent? I'd love for you to still come, it's just that the cabin is full up! If folks have outdoor winter camping gear, the more the merrier! I don't think anyone is leaving after the main group at 2, but you'd be welcome to join up down there.

So is everybody bringing skis? Or just snowshoes? Just wondering if skis will be possible if the layer of snow is deep enough there

    February 13, 2014

  • Steffi

Hi Eryn, I am ready at about 1pm. Any time from than on will work for me. I left you a message on your answer machine. I will try to talk to you in the evening to see how we work things out. Thanks

And is there firewood pre chopped there? :) probably not

    February 12, 2014

    • Sarah J.

There is wood already semi-chopped for the wood stove (and there should be an ax in the shed, unless someone made off with it). I'm pretty sure it's noon on Saturday for when we need to be out. For skis, I'm planning on bringing my classic set, along with some kahtoolas in case there's not enough snow to ski in. If the lake is frozen, ice skating is an option once we get there... I'm just skittish of thin ice. Perhaps people who need a bit more skiing can detour to do part of the Res Pass trail on the way back!

I'm trying to reschedule some afternoon meetings so I can leave in the morning. I can either offer a ride or get a ride. I'll bring a saw to cut wood. I like to stay warm! I'll also bring.beer, to keep cool next to the fire.

Do we have to be out of the cabin by a certain time Saturday?

    February 12, 2014

  • Steffi

    Hi Eryn and Nicole,
could I carpool with you guys? I would snowshoe or just use kathoolas, depending on the ground situation.

    February 10, 2014

    • Eryn R

that would work great for me if you guys really don't mind waiting! i can still snowshoe or ski depending on the group. i guess if steffi is the only one snowshoeing, that is what i will do too so we don't leave anyone behind!

      February 12, 2014

    • Nicole L

Yes I'll be there then too to meet you all. So should I bring skis anyway? Will anybody be skiing?

      February 12, 2014

  • Steffi

I have another lantern that I could bring and if needed a stove. I can bring in stuff for a salad if people would care for that for part of the dinner.

  • Sarah J.

For transport: My buddies Stephen and Jessica are heading down with me probably around lunchtime on Friday, since we don't have work that day. With the dog and gear, we won't have extra room, but we could caravan with anyone else who's ready to go noonish. It's a low-key touring/classic ski in, but snow shoes are great (or really, in this weather, we might all be wearing running shoes). I'm not sure cell phones work out there; I've never tried, but hopefully there people who are leaving work in ANC are planning to get down there at roughly the same time.

I'm bringing one stove and cook set, a couple games, a small lantern, and I can be in charge of breakfast in the morning. If anyone has another lantern, cookset/stove or has a suggestion for dinner, that would be great. Bring sleep gear, headlamps, water, and a beverage of your choosing. Is there anyone keen to bring music? Trust me, you don't want me to be the one making playlists!

Can't wait to see you all!

Eryn, you and I could carpool together. I'll be done with work shortly after 1 on Friday also

      1 · February 8, 2014

    • Eryn R

Oh great! Are you planning on snowshoeing or skiing nicole? I can do either.

      February 9, 2014

  • Nicole L

Actually I can come now!!! Not house sitting anymore

    February 8, 2014

  • Nicole L

Now I have to house sit this weekend! :(

    • Sarah J.

Boo! We'll have to catch you next time.

      February 5, 2014

  • Steffi

Is it ok if I bring the money in or would you prefer me to pay you upfront? I also would like to meet up and hike in with someone since it is my first time out there>

    February 4, 2014

    • Sarah J.

No money necessary, unless you carpool with someone and want to help with gas! It's only $45 for the cabin.

Mmm this sounds fun! Are there any groomed trails, probably not?

    January 11, 2014

  • Steffi

I would snowshoe or just hike in and I would be there Friday evening as well. I hope I will be able to get in with someone else instead by myself. I have not been to that cabin. Great idea. Thanks for organizing it.

    January 7, 2014

    • Sarah J.

Definitely. I'm hoping to leave ANC around 4 or 5. If that time works for others, we can carpool/caravan. I snowshoed it last time in icy conditions-- you'll probably be a little faster than my sled-pulling self on the way in!

      January 8, 2014

  • Eryn R

    Sounds fabulous! Are dogs allowed?

    January 7, 2014

    • Sarah J.

Mine is coming and I'd say one more would probably be fine :)

I'm signed up for the Su. Date night with my husband!

    January 7, 2014

  • Meredyth

Oh how fun! A few questions though: How many can the cabin sleep? Thoughts on some people driving down on Saturday rather than Friday night (and thus only staying one night at the cabin)?

    January 6, 2014

    • Sarah J.

Cabin sleeps 8, 3 spots taken. I wish I had it for two nights! Unfortunately this is a super-booked cabin and I could only get it for Friday. If someone has an expedition tent, we could always expand outward!

      1 · January 6, 2014

    • Meredyth

My longevity on these sorts of outings is one night...so this works well! Count me in!
