mile 7.5 hiland road, eagle river, AK
Total distance: 10 miles, or less. Anyone that's just interested in hiking, use the comment section below. Depending on where the interest lies, we may shift things around a bit.
From the South Fork Trailhead, we'll jog/fast hike to the halfway point for Symphony/Eagle Lakes. The trail spurs to the left up Hanging Valley.
I've never been to Hanging Valley; though the ascent into the valley is very gradual. We may decide to climb up a saddle in the valley, depending on the conditions. Kahtoolas are extremely important. Yak tracks and shoe may be possible for the trail portion, but if we decide to climb anything in the saddle, you won't be going very far.
11am start from South Fork Trail: it's supposed to be a cold night, but by midday it should warm up. The start may even get shifted to noon. We'll be back to the trailhead by 5, at the latest.
This will be a jog/hike combo. It won't be fast. My guess is we'll only run the 2.5 miles to the bridge and then hike most of the way from there. Remember it's going to be cold...so bring extra socks if your feet get cold in running shoes.
An open mind and flexibility is required for this! You're free to head back whenever you want, carpooling is encouraged in the comment section. Bring warm hiking boots and clothes just in case.
Side Note: we climb along the ridge on the right side of South Fork Trail this past weekend. The trails are in great shape, aside from being sheets of ice in places (like everything in the Anchorage area). This isn't a problem with kahtoolas.
