The Slow Pokes (3 miles)

There are a lot of people in this group that are just getting into, or back into running, and are worried about holding everyone else back. Not surprisingly, the organizers of this group are the ones that are the regulars, and are thus creating events that are longer, and (slightly) faster paced.

*Run slowly, or Run/Walk 3 miles roundtrip from Goose Lake across Northern Lights and down the Chester Creek Trail.*

I'm not going to make it tonight...so upset! This would have been my first Meet Up ever. I am hoping there will be more of these "slow pokes" runs, as I am a little rusty and haven't ran seriously in a couple of months. Can't wait to meet you all.

We used to do this every Weds from Peanut Farm to/past Taku Lake w the adventurers. Talking about doing that again. Nice bc PF or Midnight Sun are so close fora "maybe" afterwards.

What may be simple or easy for some people is not for those people just getting back in to running or just starting to run for the first time. I haven't attended many events since joining because I can't run 6-10 miles at a 7 minute pace. The few times I've been out I've been left so far behind that it defeated the purpose of me running with a group. So having some nice, easy, starter runs for those of us just healing from injuries is great.

This would be a good group for you, then, since I'm sure none of the runs I've been on with these folks have been close to 7 minute miles-- for any distance!

I'm soooo disappointed!!! I screwed up and scheduled for new tires at 530! The ALCAN decided to take one of my tires and I've been wanting so bad to get my spare back in my trunk where it belongs! I look forward to meeting you all VERY soon!

You know, I'm new to this group. And typically have NOT run with a group much before. But in the *cycling* club we'd usually have at least two rides per week that were SHORT (under 20 miles) and SLOW (under 13 mph). On these easy rides NO ONE WAS DROPPED. That was the idea. If you can't tolerate going slow, then you didn't go on these rides. I prefer this kind of format, over a meet up at the end of the route. I enjoy company while I'm running, and it keeps me going and makes me run better.

I'll show up, and even though I'm not a group leader, maybe I can get someone slow, who knows the way to join me. If others are interested, I'll lead a run that will be no more than 3 miles total, out and back or loop if possible, at no faster than an average 12 min mile (5 mph). That's about all I can do right now. :)

Just moved to Anchorage last Monday. Gotta get out and meet people- hoping I keep up! I haven't been running in a month!

In response to Annie's comment, I also have not run with a group because I am not a "10-min miler" and although I can run several miles w/o walking I mostly run/walk (Galloway) because it's so much easier on my legs and feels so good. I did 7-mile run/walk this weekend and it was wonderful. So, I'd always be left in the dust in a group run. It would be nice to have a route that ended with a social gathering spot so I could "catch up" and end up with folks to meet and get to know. (Like the Pub Runs). Am I not a "real" runner because I run/walk? Oh, well. I do it 3/4x a week and still call it running and I still get the HIgh and love it. I started running at 47 years old and it's one of my biggest life accomplishments and has enhanced my life tremendously. :) Just kinda sorry I can't always do it with a group due to my pace. I'll be there Wednesday bringing up the rear.

This is a great idea; like many of the comments i am recovering from a winter of little running due to plantar faciitis and slowly getting back into it; i would be interested in going a littke further than 3 but my pace won't be very fast

Awesome. Sounds like there will be others in the same boat. We can split up into a few different groups based on who wants to go what distance. I also suspect with such a big group (which is awesome) that we will split up a bit according to pace.

Sounds fun:) maybe anyone who wants to can do another three a little faster afterwards?

Hullo! I haven't come to any events yet. Been recovering from foot injury. Is this route all paved? I want to select the right shoes. And it sounds like dogs are welcome?

    April 4, 2014

    • Kenton C.

Its paved...though there is snow on it now. Dogs welcome...leashes required by municipal laws. Also, most of the people signed up have never been to any of these group runs yet :-)

Perfect. Just what I needed as I am recovering from a back injury but love to run.

Hoping to make this one too! Been part of the group for awhile but have had some arch and foot issues that have kept me on my butt and away from running; it's also made me sooo lazy, blah. I am antsy to get back into it, yay for the slow pokes! =)

No worries, Janet, you did not miss anything. The run is next week.

I hope no one else made that mistake...I planned this one out for when I'm guessing the snow will have melted mostly off the trail! 3 straight days of 32F+ this weekend!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
