Crow Pass the day after the race

Since most folks who signed up for this live on the East side of town, let's plan on meeting at the Muldoon Carrs at 8 am as planned to key swap and send a car to each side of the trail.  See you on Sunday.

Let's run Crow Pass the day after the race! I have been told that this is the perfect time to do the trail - mid July so everything is green and growing and gorgeous, but also directly after 130 runners go through, so the vegetation is flattened and any remaining snow has a good path cut into it. Plus, we get a trail report in the Alaska Daily News as per the race results, so what's not to like?

For anyone not familiar, Crow Pass Trail is a 22.5 (or so) point to point that is a portion of the historic Iditarod Trail, between the Eagle River Nature Center and the upper Crow Creek Mine area. The trail is rough, often steep (in particular coming north up and over Crow Pass) and involves a challenging crossing of Eagle River itself, no bridge included.

An earlier start usually means a lower river for the crossing, but I imagine that we can sort out details on cars on each end and a start time when we see who signs up. Tentatively, two groups and a key swap might work best?

Been waiting to see how my schedule develops before responding, sorry for the delay. I'm stuck at Kuparuk and will not be able to attend. :(

Any idea what time we will be starting the run from gird? 10? And expecting to take us 5 hours probably?

    July 25, 2014

    • James

No response from Lauren re attending, so I presume that means it's just Mike, Adam, myself and you. Perhaps we'll do two groups of two going both ways. I would presume that whoever is running from the south will be to the TH by 9 am or so, but i can't say exactly. Pace really depends on who shows, but about five hours-ish sounds about right.

I will plan to meet you all in girdwood at the trailhead

just noticed i have a soccer game on sunday. it's the last game of the season, so i think i'll do a run saturday instead.

James - What, if anything, is the scoop with car shuttling back to Girdwood from Eagle River?

    July 22, 2014

    • James

I would guess two cars leaving from Carrs going to each end, each hopefully with two or more people, with each car being roughly split along pace - slower and faster. Meet somewhere in the middle, exchange keys, and continue.

Got it. I'm still on the fence pending my Saturday schedule but will keep you updated as things evolve!

      July 23, 2014

  • Jeremy M.

I would be interested in doing this. But seeing as I've never ran with this group what kind of pace will you all be running?

    July 21, 2014

    • James

i suspect that we'll have two groups form up at the meeting point at Carrs; one faster group, one slower. The more significant issue on Crow Pass is the rocks hiding under the grass, but offhand, if I had to guess at paces, maybe a group running at 10 to 13 minute miles, and then a group running at 13 to 15? It's such a pretty trail, there is something to be said for running it more slowly and enjoying the view to. Mike, who is definitely coming, is fast, I'm moderately quick (like a 10 minute marathon mile on a flat course), and I'm not sure about the rest of the group.

    • Meredyth

Jeremy, you sound like an awesome addition to the group! Come run with us! (I totally did not mean to sound patronizing - there have been issues in the past of new people, particularly new to Alaska, not quite understanding the difference between trail running and just regular running, and ending up very overwhelmed.)

Are we doing the whole thing?? (Not sure I can swing this level of commitment on Sunday.) What about Nicole's idea to do it Saturday a few hours after the race start...

    July 21, 2014

    • James

Nope! The event is for Sunday, for the whole course. You can certainly plan a separate event if you'd like too.

      July 21, 2014

  • Meredyth

Does anyone want to do this the FOLLOWING weekend...?

    July 14, 2014

  • Kenton C.

I would love to do this, but having done the eagle river half a bazillion times and knowing how amazingly awesome the girdwood half is...i would go crow pass to eagle river and back. And then putz around the mines and glaciers above Raven. Or explore the dozens of valley offshoots along the way. And maybe backpack up to the lake. Oh yes. I like that idea. I sign up for that!

Or what about doing it on Saturday a few hours after the race start?

    1 · July 11, 2014

  • Meredyth

Not sure I'm game for the ENTIRE trail but perhaps...

    July 7, 2014

    • Eryn R

      i agree with this sentiment.

      July 11, 2014

  • Mike M

I'll volunteer to go the opposite direction and facilitate the vehicle situation.

    July 10, 2014

    tentative right now...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
