Mat Su and Turnagain Ice Report

Hayflats: Good skating west of the P/G interchange lots of it is lighted by the highway lights. Access from frontage road.

Goose Bay airstrip: Still good C+ quality ice.

Wasilla Lake: Small rink plowed and lighted

Turnagain Arm Tideflats: Near MP 82 ? between peterson creek and 20 mile river there are patches of ice that can be linked together. Solid and smooth ice. The one caveat is that there is usually a thin ribbon of broken ice and water in the first 50 feet from the highway in places that you should be real careful of.

Peterson Creek Marsh: This thin marsh betwixt the highway and the mountain has patches of smooth clear ice that can be linked together for a decent little skate.

Whittier Town Roadskating: This was freaking Amazing tuesday afternoon, Super Golden+++you could skate from the harbor triangle to Whittier Creek, cross the tracks, and skate from the creek all the way to smittys cove, and up by the buckner building. Some of this was sanded just after I skated it but there is still some decent road skating here.

Whittier Harbor Docks: Alot of these are covered in about 2 inches of ice. Im not saying that this is a good idea, but im saying you can skate on most of the docks if you were so inclined.

Mat su Ice report

Hayflats: Decent ice on marsh and spring creek north of nelson road to east of the interchange, somewhat textured and irregular, some portages.

Wasilla Creek: Connect hayflats marsh to wasilla creek for a decent skate, some portages. Start from nelson road and head southwest. The farther out you get, the more snow there is for some reason. On sunday I did a 6.7 mile rt skate and hike this way out to the hunting shack and marsh. Rabbit Slough is unskatable has too much snow and so on. The big marsh appears to be covered in snow as well.

Wasilla Lake: Theres about a 2 mile roundtrip skating on plowed ice from the park to mat su resort a few short portages of like 25 yards.

Matanuska River Southbridge: This was golden till a day or 2 ago and now has a thin layer of blown snow on it.

Matanuska River north of palmer: Appears to have mostly blown off and probably has great skating, Im going to check it tomorrow.

Cottonwood Creek: Some limited skating in beautiful downtown wasilla going north from the parks hwy for a ways upstream.

Mat Su Ice Report:

Hayflats: Spring creek east of the PG interchange to aand above matanuska road is simply exquisite, especially skating directly underneath the interchange on glassy new ice. Easiest to park off matanuska road and go from there.

Cottonwood Creek: North and south of Bogard road there is beautiful ice though it goes maybe a half mile each way, definitely worth a stop.

Upcoming Skating Opportunities:

South side of the valley (Knik/Jim/Bodenburg confluence/bridge pond, FCS area, and etc) These areas melted off and got rained on llast night and may provide some fab skating. Be very careful as the knik normally has alot of free water flowing in it. Right now there is water on all this.

Ship creek tide Flats: Fairly high tides may crest over the flat area where people fish just across the ship creek bridge in the next day or 2, and freeze in what is normally gorgeous ice 5 minutes from downtown. Other estuaries and flats may be good as well.

Hayflats: Continuing nice ice lots of places, including some roadskating. Rabbit Slough is no good too much snow remaining, other areas are good to golden.

Palmer: Roadskating on the bike path between arctic avenue and the old carrs mall. Some parking lots and so forth are skatable as well.

Matanuska Ice Report

Isolated skating can be found on the Matanuska at MP 69, 71, and 75, and on the Chickaloon 5 marsh. All fairly high quality, but not super extensive. Worth driving from wasilla, probably not worth driving from anchorage.

As the temps warm up in the next 2 weeks, there is a pretty good possibility of seeing quite alot of skating materialize on the flats and a few rivers.

Mat su ice report

Tideflats: This was glassy and golden for a week straight and about 90 percent of it went T-U / Pau during the day today due to 42 degree weather. Theres still a little decent ice in the righthand slough and places where there is less than 1 inch of snow that insulated the ice surface.

Chickaloon Area: Still decent ice in locations listed in last report.

Saw two sets of sandhills flying over the tideflats tonight which means that were Getting to the tail end of the tail end of skating season. Sad.

Mat su Ice Report
By luck and geography there is still good ice to skate.

Tideflats: Offshore of the matanuska estuary there is still a few miles of B+ quality ice to skate. Better to skate in the morning but later still works.

Chickaloon area: Isolated skating in areas off the Mat and on the chickaloon 5 marsh.

Unusual to have skating this late into the year.
