Arctic Valley Reconnaissance - Skiing

I would like to check out the trail condition from Arctic Valley to Ship Creek to prepare for the Arctic to Indian Traverse later in March. It is steep going down to the creek and you will want to bring skins for the climb back up. We will meet in Carrs Muldoon for carpool. Folks can also meet at the Ship Creek TH at 9:20AM. I will definitely turn around by the creek, but that is not to say you have to turn around with me. Feel free to ski further if you are so inclined. The trip is on the military land, so you might want to check in with JBER on line. http://jber.isportsman.net/home

This is not a trip for beginner skiers. Dogs are welcome.

Great skiing in a warm sunny day. Rufus had fine going to the creek and back. Quite a few people did the traverse today and the trail was well broken and deeply grooved.

Qianyu, I have skied this sevral times, both starting in Indian, and at the Arctic start. I preferred the Indian start. This is a 12 hour day for sure, and much easier if you can do it all in daylight. Everytime I skied down into Indian the snow was soft and rotten; you would have postholed for five miles if you didn't have skis. Not sure how dog friendly that would be. Must have skins for sure.

Is this a good trail we can also hike once snow is gone, would really like to see it. Only have skate skies though.

Yes, you can hike it, but it gets boggy at areas. I have never through hiked this trail.

Trail conditions were great about a week ago when we skied down there and we enjoyed breaking trail through powder. We turned around about six miles up the valley due to time constraints. You should have fun, especially since we did a lot of trail clearing this past fall. :-)
