Heart 'n Lunger - Baldy to Blacktail (Eagle River)

Heart 'n Lunger Hike
The Heart 'n Lunger hikes will be every Tuesday evening May - September. We have done them every year since 2007. H 'n L hikes, by our definition, gain at least 1500' of elevation. Many of them will offer 2x that elevation gain for the uber-fit among us. At the other end of the fitness spectrum, the less fit in the group have good naturedly dubbed their sub-group the 'Gaspers 'n Wheezers'. Everyone is welcome on these hikes, they are a mix with 'out and back' and 'loop' routes.

This week we'll do "Baldy to Blacktail Rocks", a classic Eagle River hike.

WHEN/WHERE:
Meet at 6:00 PM at the Baldy Trail Head, at the end/top of Skyline Drive in Eagle River. To get there you go up Eagle River Loop to it's highest point and turn onto Skyline Dr. The road will change names and switchback quite a few times, just keep going up the main paved road, the trailhead is at the end of the road. You can throw this address in your GPS to get there: 12790 Golden Eagle Dr. Eagle River, AK

We'll start hiking at 6:15, whoever comes after that please follow the right-hand trail up.

Details:

Climb from the parking lot (1900 ft) to Baldy (3000 ft) & onward to Blacktail Rocks (4400 ft)

It's about a 7 mile round trip; plan to be out for 3 to 3.5 hours if you're going all the way. We will take the steep and direct route up Baldy and follow the ridge back to Blacktail Rocks.

BRING:
-- Ski/ trekking poles (optional but very helpful on the steep, slippery or icy areas)

-- Wind shell/pants

-- Non-cotton layers you can shed or add as temps change

-- Water & trail snacks

DOGS:
Yes this is a great place for dogs.

COST:
No parking fee here yet. Parallel parking on the side of the road.

Beautiful night. Did anyone happen to find a blue cap on a rock?
Was fun tuning into everyone as they came and went with different time frames.

Wonderful hike! Beautiful and sunny, along with a nice cool breeze. A couple of gliders were really catching some air! Really enjoyed meeting everyone and the conversation. Thanks Sean/Kyong for organizing.

Great hike! The sun was out and the breeze kept us cool. Not sure how many people actually made it out; there were lots of early starters and stragglers. I'm sure everyone had a great evening enjoying an awesome Alaskan summer evening.

From the looks of the weather, this is going to be a "hot" and lunger hike for me. It'll be baking on the steep route. I'll probably start a bit early and either meet you all on top of Baldy or along the trail to Blacktail Rocks.

Janetta, maybe three or four hours depending on how fast you are.

I think this sounds fun. I'm brand new but I'll be there. I'll have to google map it :) Hope the weather is just as fantastic as it has been these last few days!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
