Solstice camp out at Spencer Glacier

  • June 21, 2013 · 1:00 PM
  • Portage Train Stop

Have reserved the entire campground at Spencer Glacier for the Solstice! Campground holds 25 and has firepit, platforms, etc. Cost is $100 which we'll split by attendees. I have my 9 year old grandson coming so I'd love to get a couple kids.

Of course, will be fun for adults to so all are welcome! Experienced packrafters may wish to make float out to road, but I won't be doing that since I have child on board. If you are interested in rafting out please state in RSVP so those folks can organize and coordinate car-drop.

There are things to do at the glacier: Hike (free) float and ice climb (for a fee unless you have your own gear) I am planning to rent a raft or IC and paddle the lake. Train is $56 from Portage for Ak residents, I'll add the link at the bottom.

If you are going to be on water PFD, float bad and whistle are mandatory.

Plan potluck campfire dinner Fri night

No shows really bum me out so please only RSVP if you really want to come, make your train reservations promptly, and change your RSVP the minute you discover you can't come. Don't forget to tell railroad you are Ak resident so you get discount!

Oh thanks, Lisa! I'm on the Slope until Thursday - if we can connect next weekend that will work. If not, don't worry about it. I can pick up another one :-)

Great trip. Didn't think taking the train to Spencer would be as fun as skiing to it has been, but it was a blast. Enjoyed the hiking trails, paddling around the iceburgs, and floating out. Thanks for organizing, Maureen. Enjoyed meeting your family. Neil, your daughter rocks! Dan, you were a life-saver with the borrowed paddle. Amy, sorry Eska's paw kept you from doing too much. Lisa, wish we'd gotten your kids out on a boat. Sue, always nice to spend time with you.

Oh, I forgot, someone in the group forgot a black T-shirt at the camp. I have it. Please contact me so I can give you back your T-shirt.

    Thanks.

Nice bunch of people-Amy and Neil, hope Eska's foot is better. Loved watching Alexis challenge her inner outdoorswoman! Thanks to Jennifer and Andy for sharing boat, Lisa for bringing wood, Sue for the beer, Dan for taking Brian out to the glacier. TDN, you have my everlasting thanks :)

Water conditions are mostly class 1, with a class 2 splashy section after the 1st bridge. A few of us floated out on alpackas and a seahawk with no problems other than navigating the numerous channels toward the end. Either way there are only 2 bridges on the seward to take out and both are walkable to eachother incase you dont find your car.

Great, thanks for the tips! Think we're going to give it a try for this afternoon as a day trip...

Did anyone happen to raft down Placer River? We're thinking of doing it tomorrow and were wondering what the water conditions are. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

I have camp filter but no saw. If someone has a saw please bring so that we can have a campfire!

I didn't hear back from anyone after my email so this will be kind of loosely organized and casual. I'll meet y'all at the train station in Portage. Can't wait!

I'm bringing some nachos with black bean and guacamole to share. I'm not sure what anyone else is bringing. I'll just bring my pocket stove to boil water .

      June 19, 2013

    • Amy

Perfect. I had the same thought about my backpacking stove to boil water. I think we'll make a dinner plan that doesn't require the big stove and bring a sweet treat to share.

Is anyone else planning on boating out?

    June 16, 2013

    • maureen

I'm not. There is possibility that my son and his friend will but it's not 100% firm. I'll send out group email to try to ascertain everyone's plans.

      June 16, 2013

    • Amy

We won't be either because we will have my pup.

Anybody interested in going in and camping for the night and then pack rafting out.

    1 · May 17, 2013

      Yes! Are you on board?

      June 16, 2013

I made other plans for the weekend through Taste Buds.

      June 16, 2013

  • Amy

Considering this!!! My guy has kiddos so just want to see if they are on board before adding an RSVP. Question: is there any way to get a dog out there without hauling a kennel from the train to the camp?

    May 25, 2013

    • maureen

I think I'll pack somewhere between backpacking and car camping, only 1.1 miles I can lug for 2 trips...I'll bring comfort food. When I backpack I carry less than 25 lbs, will probably bring around 40 We can talk about sharing a cooler or two as it gets closer.

Thanks for all of the info, Maureen!

      May 30, 2013

  • Amy

Ok, reposting. My brain hurts. It will be me, my guy, his 12 year old DAUGHTER, and my pup! Sheesh :-) Really looking forward to this!

    May 30, 2013

  • Amy

Ok I got more info on bringing dogs! Dogs do need to travel in an airline approved travel crate and its an extra $20 per pet. The developed group campsite is 1.1 miles from the drop off point at Spencer, so if I bring my pup I may leave the crate at the drop off site. There are some shelters there and I may just tuck it away for the two nights and hope it's still there when we head back out. This is, of course, at my own risk and if anyone else chooses to do something similar it would also be at your own risk. I just don't want to lug a large crate for a mile because I can barely cart it through the airport :-)

    • maureen

I only have the campsites for 1 night so if you are staying 2 you need to reserve the second night or there is free camping outside of the developed campground that you could move into for second night

      May 29, 2013

    • Amy

I realized after I posted this that you only had it for one night - for some reason I assumed the whole weekend, but one night will work better for us anyway so it won't be an issue! :-)

do you know if the trains leave sat morning-work on friday

    May 24, 2013

    • maureen

no, once a day. could you work half day Fri? or play hookey?

      May 24, 2013

  • maureen

I will bring a packraft to paddle around the lake but am not floating out since I'm pretty inexperienced and will have a child. Lisa, if you are an experienced ice climber, by all means bring your tools. They do offer guided ice climbing out there.
