Hike Government Peak to Summit lake at the Hacher pass

What/Where: Hike government peak and over to the Summit Lake at the  Hatcher pass

This hike is not for the beginers, trail is Rocky and steep from the parking lot and the ridge from the peak toward to Hatcher pass is narrow and strenuous.

Peak height: 4,781
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Mileage: 7-9 miles
Elevation gain: 3000+ from parking lot

We will meet at the Eagle River Carrs and drive to the Hatcher pass and leave a few cars on the Hatcher pass rd near the Independence Mine visitors parking area. Then drive to the Govenment Peak trail head on Edgerton-parks rd. Hike up to the Government peak and follow the Ridge on the left toward to the Summit lake on the Fishook rd at the Hatcher pass, Once we pass the first ridge from the Government peak, rest of the walking is easy.

Trail Head Parking:
Mile 7.5 Palmer Fish-hook rd turn left onto Edgerton-Parks rd and travel 2 miles. Look for the "gov't Peak" trail sign and travel to the end of the driveway.

One more thing worth mentioning is that this area on the lower 1/3 and time of year is your most likely time and place to run into a porcupine so be aware if you have a dog along. My heeler dog just got a mouthful and noseful of "decorations" tonite just a short distance from that trail. Good times.

Ive done it on other dogs before but when theyre in the mouth and especially on this particular dog its impossible to do without sedation.

I just did the Government Peak race yesterday. Trail conditions are muddy, not much snow at all and only near the top. Mosquitoes weren't bad, but I didn't stop. Temps at the top were just about the same at the bottom, actually warmer. It was sunny at the top, cloudy and chilly at the bottom.

Congratulations, Dawn. Thank you for the info. Hope to see you on the trail.

Hi Dave!!! Up to the peak is steep but not bad, but the ridge around the corner needs A lot of Rock Huggings!! And. There is no way around it,

This is one of the most expansive
Views you can see from the knik glacier all the way to anchorage and willow. Really gives you a sense of scale.

Thougjt id mention that mosquitoes are atrocious on the lower part of this trail this year. If you stop five minutes you will have about 200 on you. Worst ive ever seen Also be prepared for fairly wintery conditions above 3500. Could be as cold as 15-20 degrees. Still lots and lots of snow on north facing areas. I may join you guys not sure.
