Wolverine

Wolverine is the last of our beginner Sunday hikes. It's about 10 miles and 3500 feet and should take us 5-7 hours. We need to be on trail by 8:40 in order for me to finish in time.

The first part of the trail may be very muddy. The final approach looks like there is a bit of snow but I'm sure there are steps already up there by this time. Bring ice grippers if you are uncomfortable on snow. Trekking poles are also real helpful on this one.

It's often windy on the ridgeline so bring wind layer, hat, gloves.

Views from Wolvie are really amazing-you can see down 2 beautiful valleys-Long Lake and Williwaw. Will make great summit photo for those who've worked up to this one over the past couple months.

After getting shut out last week I will start this rain or shine.

$5 parking or state parks pass works here.

Great hike on a hot day. Saw a lot of old friends along the way, Meetuper or not. Hiking is definitely a social activity in a town like Anchorage. The day was so hot that bears resorted to swimming to cool off. (See pictures.) Dogs preferred to wade in wet muddy pools instead of having their paws baked on dirt surface. Yeah for summer.

The bear was just about finishing his bath as I was leaving. People were very excited about the sighting.

Knew it was going to be a good day when I got to the parking lot. A minute after arriving a moose wandered out of the trees into the pool there, waded around for three or four minutes to cool off, then disappeared back into the trees. Couple of dampish spots on the trail, but nothing bad. Our sub group avoided the snow near the top by going across under it and up the last of the ridgeline from Rusty Point - so dry boots all the way.

Fun day out in the sun !! Thanks Maureen.

Everybody made the top-Yay group! Thank you to all the considerate people who helped out leading the way- we couldn't do 20 person hikes without everybody being flexible and accommodating. Gorgeous day!

forecast is sunny with possible late afternoon shower over mountains so rain jacket a good idea just in case.

Does anyone have a spare pair of katoolahs (lrg) I could borrow? Bringing a friend who doesn't have hiking shoes. I would think she would need the extra grip and stability of katoolahs

Meeting at Prospect Heights trailhead. If you want I can meet you at Freddie's on Abbot at 8:10, just let me know. If you don't have a sticker yet you may want to carpool just to avoid the $5 fee.
