Chugach Peak Baggers Special #2- Hidden Lake

When and What:

July 12, Friday at 5 pm to July 14, Sunday 5 PM. Hike to the Hidden Lake and camp and hike around the lake.

This is an easy place to get to with lots of places to explore and wander about. Hidden Valley is a gently sloping glacial valley with really cool rock formations. A creek with lush greenery runs through the middle. Just off the Powerline Trail, a narrow track leads up a side valley to a trio of grand destinations: Hidden peak (5105ft), The Ramp (5240 ft), and The Wedge(4660 ft).

Pack your camping gears and come out!

I would like to hike to Hidden peak, the Ramp, and The Wedge on Saturday and Sunday morning. Everyone is welcome to come out and camp.

Thanks Kyong for putting it all together--that was a great site with so many dayhike/climb/bushwhack possibilities. It was a great bunch of people, too. Sorry for cutting out early on Sunday without goodbyes, but my feet/ankle was wrecked for further hikes and I had some stuff to do. I look forward to getting out more with you all soon.

I want to thank Kyong for carrying my pack. Yes, she did. My day pack, and only part of the time as we "hiked" Avalanche Peak. I put hiked in quotations because I started mountaineering in the Adirondak Mountains of New York state, and we "climbed" those, and none of them involved more than walking uphill. The stuff Kyong does definitely is "climbing" in my way of thinking.
    Thank you Kyong.

Thanks for organizing this, Kyong, and for convincing me to jump in the lake after backpacking. I had a great weekend. Your pick for a campsite (Hidden Lake) was fabulous. Our attempt on Williwaw Peak was a great adventure. Thanks to Shane for organizing the Williwaw Peak adventure.

Yes to swimming in the lake after a long hike!! I started at the Hidden lake, hiked straight up to the ridge and hiked O'Malley (5150), Hidden (5105), Ram (5240), Wedge (4550), and walked the ridge from the Wedge back to the Lake (10 hrs). Sunday, hiked up to the Ship pass and followed a sheep trail to near the power line pass and hiked Avalanche peak (5050). Thanks to Kneely to finding the summit. it was very nice weekend camping and thank you guys, hope to hike with you all soon.

One of the things that struck me about this backpacking trip was that it only takes a 15 minute drive and a 2-3 hr hike to be in complete wilderness, surrounded by mountains and incredible views of the valley below, if you live in Anchorage. Nice company, beautiful camp kitchen next to a creek, and very warm temperatures which allowed a comfortable 'dip' into the lake after the hike in.

Great campsite with a view down the valley and a slice of Anchorage to one side and Hidden lake and the mountains behind us. Gorgeous weather didn't hurt either and a long strenuous day of hiking - doesn't get any better !!

Didn't quite make Williwaw, got as far as the ridge looking down over Rock Lake. We sidehilled down from Ship Pass thinking to preserve elevation and a couple of us bushwhacked back on the valley floor- bad guesses. Next time we'll take the nice trail a couple of the other folks found on the Avalanche side of Ship Creek and save a lot of time and effort.

Great weekend of backpacking - thanks Kyong !

Hey Shane--I think I may know you from a previous trip. I'm itching to get out of town here, so I'll be looking for you guys at 2:30, if that's still on. I'm also game for the Williwaw route or some configuration of that.

We'll hang out by the big rock near the gate by the ranger station for 5mins or so before 2:30. I have a blue pack.

Any special gear or mountaineering skills required?

    July 7, 2013

Here's a link from a guy ( experienced climber ) that did the whole ridgeline, the section from Hidden to the Ramp sounds way past my comfort level, but don't know if that's what Kyong has in mind so just an FYI. http://teton.outerloc...

CHANGE OF PLANS FOR ME. I just got invited to climb a peak I want to get near Seward. Friday. I may still try to join you all at Hidden Lake, but probably will stay in Seward overnight, Friday evening. And so I changed my RSVP to "no". But I still might show up. Have a great climb. BE SAFE PLEASE. Kneely

I am going to bike and hike in late Friday evening. Not too late, but I will need time after work Friday to pack, and get organized. I hope to leave Glen Alps at 7-8. If someone wants to join me, let me know. [masked], I hope to climb Hidden Peak on Saturday with you, but not do the ridge to the Ramp. I've tried to do it starting at the Ramp and headed toward Hidden Peak, and it was a "no-go" for me. And so I will descend. I'll probably head back to town Saturday afternoon, or evening.

Hi Kyong, sounds like a great trip! How many miles to backpack into the lake? And I'm also wondering if any special gear is required. Looking forward to meeting you. This will be my first outing with the group, but don't worry, I'm an experienced backpacker.

    July 7, 2013

It's about 4-5 miles from the parking to camp site.
