Heart 'n Lunger Hike- Harp in Eagle River

Heart 'n Lunger Hike
The Heart 'n Lunger hikes will be every Tuesday evening May - September. We have done them every year since 2007. H 'n L hikes, by our definition, gain at least 1500' of elevation. Many of them will offer 2x that elevation gain for the uber-fit among us. Distance and time: 3-4 miles in 3-3.5 hours.  At the other end of the fitness spectrum, the less fit in the group have good naturedly dubbed their sub-group the 'Gaspers 'n Wheezers'. Everyone is welcome these hikes are mix with 'out and back' and " Loop"

Harp Mt is about 5000 ft, the summit is 2600' above the parking area. It is steep from the parking lot and less than 2 miles to the top. Prepare to walk and/or crawl to the top. If the wind is blowing it can be very strong up there. Once we get to the top, I would like to walk the left side the ridge to next peak and hike down to the parking lot.

Directions:

The trailhead: This trailhead is a little confusing to get to so I encourage carpooling. It is NOT the South Fork trail-head. Continue straight all the way up Hiland Rd, past the turn to South Fork, until arriving at a fork in the road. Stay left and continue uphill until the road ends and there is a "turnaround". Park well past the 'fire dept/no parking/warning' signs.

What to Bring:

-- Ski/trekking poles (helpful on the steep and/or muddy sections).

-- Layers of non-cotton clothing; wind shell and wind pants.

-- Warm hat & gloves, and gaiters optional but recommended, may have snow.

-- Water & snacks.

DOGS: OK

Great hike! I tried to cheat by starting earlier than Kyong and progressing at a no flower smelling speed. She beat me to the top anyway! Is there no mercy?

Nice hike, sorry, didn't know who or how many actually hike tonight because some came a little late. I heard that most of us hiked to the summit and 9 of us made a loop. Thanks.

I would like to get in on this. It'll be my first time out with you all, but I don't have a way to get out there. If anyone is willing to drag me out, I can throw down for gas and parking.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
