Heart 'n Lunger Hike-Baldy to Blacktail (Eagle River)

Heart 'n Lunger Hike
The Heart 'n Lunger hikes will be every Tuesday evening May - September. We have done them every year since 2007. H 'n L hikes, by our definition, gain at least 1500' of elevation. Many of them will offer 2x that elevation gain for the uber-fit among us. Distance and time: 3-4 miles in 3-3.5 hours.  At the other end of the fitness spectrum, the less fit in the group have good naturedly dubbed their sub-group the 'Gaspers 'n Wheezers'. Everyone is welcome these hikes are mix with 'out and back' and " Loop"

This week we'll do "Baldy (3000 ft) to Blacktail Rocks(4400 ft)", a classic Eagle River hike.

It's about a 7 mile round trip; plan to be out for 3 to 3.5 hours if you're going all the way. We will take the steep and direct route up Baldy and follow the ridge back to Blacktail Rocks.

WHEN/WHERE:
Meet at 6:00 PM at the Baldy Trail Head, at the end/top of Skyline Drive in Eagle River. To get there you go up Eagle River Loop to it's highest point and turn onto Skyline Dr. The road will change names and switchback quite a few times, just keep going up the main paved road, the trailhead is at the end of the road. You can throw this address in your GPS to get there: 12790 Golden Eagle Dr. Eagle River, AK

We'll start hiking at 6:10, whoever comes after that please follow the right-hand trail up.

BRING:
-- Ski/ trekking poles (optional but very helpful on the steep, slippery or icy areas)

-- Wind shell/pants

-- Non-cotton layers you can shed or add as temps change

-- Water & trail snacks

DOGS:
Yes this is a great place for dogs.

COST:
No parking fee here yet. Parallel parking on the side of the road.

We started a bit later than everybody. Enjoyed catching up with Ryan. Made it almost to where everybody was at the top, but the fog was so dense, we decided to stop just before. We could hear you guys. While we were fine going back, I did not enjoy the fog a bit, although the blueberries were good.

Wow I didn't see you once! We got wet from the fog. Interesting pics,

Thanks, Sean and group! A fun hike. I made it close enough to the top to overhear a marco-polo-esque search for the group in the fog - at which point I turned back and joined the berry pickers on the descent :)

Great hike, thanks for organizing! Ya the fog was really thick, which was neat for a while. I headed back early and was amazed at how easy it was to get dis-oriented from Blacktail back to Baldy eventhough I know the trail well. Made it down just fine though, with a filthy dog :-)

Though I planned to turn around @ 730 I was glad I continued on to the top at a little after 8pm. Back at truck by 10. Fog was thick coming down. 3am came hard.

got there about 5 minutes late (traffic! ugh..) and missed the group. thought I could finally make one of these hikes, but was thwarted in my efforts to meet up, sorry to have missed everyone. did the hike about 3 miles out and turned around due to the crazy soupy fog, so never caught up with the group. cool hike though, thanks for getting me out farther than baldy, anyway, and hope to successfully get out with this group sometime!

Thanks, Sean, I for one did. Thick, soupy fog for the entire descent, dreamy with us ghosts out wandering/adventuring. Great to see everyone!

We managed to get all the way to the true Blacktail Rocks summit and back in around 4 hours. Entered the clouds partway up Blacktail and they parted for a few minutes while we were hanging out on the summit, then the fog closed up around us and socked us in until we were done hiking and driving down the road. Hope everyone enjoyed it.

Is this an out and back hike? Do you return to
original parking place after black tail rocks?

    August 12, 2013

    • Sean

This is an 'out and back'. All our Heart and Lunger hikes return to the original parking lots, we don't have time to deal with shuttling cars and still finish them in a timely manner.

Another place says time is 7 to 10pm. Which one is it?

    August 7, 2013

    • Sean

It's at 6pm as posted here. Where is this 'other place' that you found showing an incorrect time so we can correct it?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
