Turnagain Arm Trail - Rainbow to Windy Out and Back

Lets take a short and scenic mid-day hike on the Turnagain Arm Trail from Rainbow to Windy Corner and back. Round trip distance is 3.8 miles, with about 1,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. Plan to be out about 3 hours. Rainbow trailhead is located at mile 108 on the Seward Highway.

The weather forecast is sunny, with light winds and highs in the 20s. Be prepared for possible local wind gusts and wind chill. I expect to hike with ice grippers, but I'll pack my snowshoes in case we hit a drifted section and I need to break trail.

Below is a view from the Turnagain Arm Trail near Windy Corner in December 2012, looking northwest toward Rainbow Peak...

Location: Rainbow trailhead is on the Seward Highway about 4 miles east of McHugh Creek. As you come around the bend into the Rainbow Creek Valley area, you'll see a scenic pullout on the right, followed by a road to the private houses on the left. Continue on Seward Highway past the houses toward Indianhouse Mountain straight ahead. At the end of the guardrail, turn left into the trailhead parking lot before Indianhouse Mountain. See the red arrow on the aerial photo below...

Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are OK. Please bring a leash and be prepared to clean up.

This was a fun hike. Good idea Greg. I second Judith's positive critique below. Some steep hillside, a couple creek crossings, and somewhat messy trail for a first winter hike, Dody can handle anything now!

Not much sun, but otherwise nice weather so we quickly shed layers of clothing. Trail was sloppy, but we packed it down fairly well. It was fun listening to Dody and Judith speak an exotic language from the equatorial Pacific... ;)
