Near Point

Plans changed to Near Point. This hike will keep us on a mostly windblown ridgeline.

This is a moderate hike, will take about 4-5 hours since my pace is a little slower lately. Micro spikes will be necessary on steep snowy slopes and icy ridgeline.

Bring good windlayer, face protection, goggles or shades, the usual essentials, trekking poles or ice ax. Wear layers. Dogs welcome. Always a good idea to bring snowshoes as we never can tell what we'll find. A bungee to strap them on pack is helpful. Also, if you are new to SS please try them on at home and adjust the straps...really hard to put them on for the first time at trailhead in freezing cold.

If weather/ snow conditions are unfavorable I'll move the hike down low so check back on day of event.

Parking is $5 and pass is good here.

A good winter work out, now my knee is popping and when it's not my knee, it's my back -- getting old(er) is not for sissies. I enjoyed chatting with Stephanie on the way down, turns out we have a west Texas connection.

Yes, visiting with you was a highlight, as was the fog. Thanks Maureen!

It was great to be out today! Despite the venue change, I counted at least 11 peeps. Trail conditions were excellent below the tree line, and good above with a few icy spots. Weather was foggy, but visibility improved near the top. Paul and I descended last and returned via the alternate route thru Lost Cabin Valley. Thanks, Maureen!

I just read the avalanche forecast and I'm moving this hike to Near Point so that we'll be on mostly windblown terrain.

Was just up at Arctic Valley today and definitely needed snowshoes. If the temps stick around the 30s, I'd recommend them. The top layer was pretty soft in a lot of spots.
