Backpacking the Telequana trail-Lake Clark NP

  • August 11, 2014 · 7:00 PM

This will be a 5 night backpack with drop-off by floatplane at Telequana Lake and pick-up at Twin Lakes, site of Dick Proenekke's cabin. We have 2 groups-1 leaving 8/11 with pickup 8/16 and the second 8/16-21.

It will be the trip of a lifetime, and will involve meandering over hills above treeline, leisurely "travel" days   with many opportunities to ridgewalk or peak bag in the eves.

You will need to be a strong experienced backpacker with an easygoing personality. There is a somewhat established trail but also a lot of route-finding and a small amount of bushwhacking (most travel is above treeline). There are 2 potentially waist deep rivers to cross. It could rain for 4 days so will be nice to have people to make us laugh instead of cry if it does.

The tough info-airfare is $600.00 We fly out of Merrill Field.

As I said, this trip is full with all deposits paid.

Absolutely spectacular route through the mountains with constantly changing terrain, we were lucky to be rain free with decent visibility for the tricky bits.

This was a tough hike for me, had to dig deep to get it done in five traveling days. Totally worth it.

This was not the route described in the original posting. I may try posting an approximate route later.

Great hiking, great group and never boring! Walked and scrambled over scree, meadows, glacier, rivers, brush. I highly recommend this hike for the diverse scenery and terrain. Tougher than I expected, and rain everyday except the pick-up day. Thanks everyone!! And especially thanks to Trail Ridge Air, they were fantastic!

Ok, i will do this again next summer unless it is horrible and I will consult you for dates before I even plan it. I am doing an adventure either off Denali highway or Wrangell St Elias around 8/17 for 3-4 nights, if you're interested let's talk!

Thank you to Jim Jenson and Trail Ridge Air- they treated us extra special and it was much appreciated. This route was tougher than I expected, but had fun and saw lots of amazing country. Thanks Mary and Rand for everything you did, really enjoyed getting to know you. Also thanks to Kyong for the much needed beer and chocolate care package at pickup :))))

We have 2 groups as John said, both with pretty firm commitments, deposits paid, etc. but will keep waitlist in case someone has to bail from this point on. I'll not repost the 2 trips since people will think it's a new trip and want to sign up but I will update the narrative above to reflect the changes when I get a day off.

The planning has gone offline so for anyone looking in,
Maureen, Ace organizer, has us as 2 groups of 5 going August 11-16 and 16-21 so we save a lot by just using 3 flights. Looking forward to this.

I'd like to have a planning meeting, maybe a weeknight after work to accommodate those who live in the about the 19th Feb.(weds) at 5:30? Those on waitlist are absolutely welcome, there are all kinds of possibilities including organizing an off-shoot trip as well as the possibility that some could bail in the coming months. I'll have some maps and more info about the drop-off and pick-up.

Wed, 2/19, at 5:30 is fine for me. Let me know if you change the date/time.

      February 4

    • maureen

We also have the option of adding 2 spots. There is a lot to talk about! So looks like 2/19 at 6:30 works, I'll send you all a mass email too when I get a chance.

You are welcome. I would enjoy this trip but not sure if I will be back in state. But, helping made me feel a part of it all.

Looks like a great trip! My husband works 28 days on/off, but August he will be in AK. I'll forward the notice and see if he likes it. If so, we'll check to see if you still have room, and tell you more about us.
