Government Peak in Hatcher Pass

We will meet at Carrs and carpoool to the trailhead.

We can start from the parking lot at mile 17 on Hatchers Pass Road, which is on the right about 2.5 miles past the Gold Mint Trail trailhead and the Mother Lode Lodge (parking fee of $5.00 unless you have state park pass)
The hiking distance is about 3.5 miles and the elevation gain is 3900' (from 870' to the 4780' summit).  A race has been held on this trail and some have run it in under an hour to the top, but normal hikers will want several hours. Peak height is 4,781, hiking time about 6-7 hours round trip, and elevation gain about 2,900.  Weather can always vary, but dress warm, with multiple layers.

BRING:
-- Ski/ trekking poles (optional but very helpful on the steeps and on rocky, slippery or icy areas)
-- Kahtoola Ice Grippers

-- Wind shell and wind pants
-- Dress in non-cotton layers so you can shed or add clothes as temps change
-- Water & trail snacks

DOGS:
Yes but they need to be sure footed and not hesitant about varied and changing terrain.

COST:
$5 parking fee to AK State Parks if you do not have an annual parking pass. Passes are available at REI or AMH for $40/year.

Another great adventure. We went higher than Government Peak and saw no one other than ourselves (except through the binoculars).

Great hike in a beautiful place that was pleasantly secluded all day. I am ready to go capture the next flag.

Couldn't get to the ridge to the Govt peak because of creeks, so we went the right side of the ridge. It was fun and nice to see entire pass. We found a flag on a ridge so maped out our next hike!!! thank you all.

Alarm didn't go off, or I killed it and didn't realize. Don't think I have enough time to make it :-( have fun! I'll meet up another time

Thank you Greg, how did you fix it?
Chelsea, hope to see you soon. Yes, I always have fun when I am out.

I just fixed this Carrs Eagle River map venue. (For some bizarre reason it was showing a location in New York state!)

Race will start at the south side of the peak and we will hike from the North, therefore, we do not share parking lot. By the time we reach the peak, most of the racers will be gone. I am going to hike up the peak and walk on the right side of the ridge to the parking lot. It is going to be a more challeng then just up to the peak.

Matanuska Peak is closeby and would be another similar. It's 4.5 miles round trip, about 5K elevation change, so a little more stiff. I'd be down for that if anyone else will. Let me know and I can send out trailhead info, or you can just google it.

Is anyone interested in either a day hike or a camp in another area?

    June 2, 2011

  • Todd

I did the race last year and I can tell you it does get pretty busy on the mountain and parking will become an issue.

Kyong, still think y'all will be at trailhead around 10:45? I figure I'd get up there around then, expecting y'all might be a little behind that.

Maureen cancelled the Reed Lakes Hiking and withdrew from this one. I don't know why? Guessing too much snow or work. I am not staying for night.
