What/Where: Hike to Iron Nipple (2830 ft) in Eagle River
Iron Nipple is the ridge in front of the Eagle River Wal-Mart.
It is about 3 mile RT, some what steep and muddy trail. While the actual distance is short, this is a real cardio workout.
There is not a lot of parking available near the trailhead, so let's meet at the Eagle River Wal-Mart and carpool to the TH on Mile Hi Rd.
Directions from Anchorage: take the North Eagle River exit to Eagle River Road and take a right (where the Wal-Mart is).
If anyone wants to meet at TH: About a mile from the Walmart on Eagle river rd, take a left on Mile Hi road. Keep switch backing up till you see a sign right in front of you that says, “No Parking Beyond this Point”, just to the right of this is the entrance to the trailhead.
We will past the gate and head to the end of the road. At the very end is a small, fenced in structure, with a metal utility pole sticking out of it. The trail is to the left of it. From the trailhead, we'll switchback up a steep wooded area till a saddle on the mountain. Then we'll turn left, pass 2 rocky knobs and enjoy the views.
-- Ski/ trekking poles (optional but very helpful)
-- Wind shell and wind pants
-- Dress in non-cotton layers so you can shed or add clothes as temps change
-- Water & trail snacks
