Heart 'n Lunger Hike-South Fork Ridge in Eagle River

Heart 'n Lunger Hike
The Heart 'n Lunger hikes will be every Tuesday evening May - September. We have done them every year since 2007. H 'n L hikes, by our definition, gain at least 1500' of elevation. Many of them will offer 2x that elevation gain for the uber-fit among us. Distance and time: 3-4 miles in 3-3.5 hours. At the other end of the fitness spectrum, the less fit in the group have good naturedly dubbed their sub-group the 'Gaspers 'n Wheezers'. Everyone is welcome these hikes are mix with 'out and back' and " Loop"

Highest point is about 4000 ft and it is lesser than 4 miles. From State Parks parking lot/ trailhead in South Fork, once we pass the board walk, take a faint trail (route) on the right to the ridge. Follow very narrow paint trail on left to the notch in the ridge, after the second notch, down to low trail.

Direction to the South Fork TH:

Take Glenn HWY North from Anchorage, take the first Eagle river Exit (Eagle river loop/ANC Landfield), stay on the right and turn right at the first light (Hiland RD), follow Hilland RD for about 5 miles and turn right on S Creek rd, right on W Creek rd.

BRING:
-- Wind shell and wind pants
-- Dress in non-cotton layers so you can shed or add clothes as temps change
-- Water & trail snacks

DOGS:
Yes

COST:
There is no parking fee at this location.

I was the first one to start, and the last one to finish, but I like it that way, it gets more enjoyable as I start becoming familiar with some of the faces as they passed me by, and I'm certainly planning to continue to attend. See you guys at Bear Mountain.

I can meet you and others, either drive or ride from Carr's Muldoon at 5:30, don't want to be late is all. Where are you gonna be parked and what do you drive?

Nicole can you make it to Carrs Muldoon by 5:30? I'll plan to be there and leave by 5:30 in front of Starbucks.

I see a lot of comments about slower hikers starting early. I'm slower but can't be there before 6, so slower people don't need to be worried about being left behind! I need some company back there!

A couple of us are definitely starting the same hike early and at a slow pace. If anyone wants to join, we'll park at 5:15 and begin hiking at 5:20. Just look for two guys both with dogs next to a Gray Explorer pickup with the License plate "CELLM8". To the 6:00 crowd, we'll see you on the ridge.

Larry and Jeff are going along for this one as well, but we are a bit slower than the average member of the group, so we will probably start the hike 45 minutes earlier than the main group.

I'm slower too so can I go with you guys?

      June 11

Of course you can join. As an added bonus, we will be dodging some traffic by meeting out there a bit earlier. We'll be at the parking lot by 5:15 PM planning to begin the hike shortly after that.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
