It's my b-day weekend and what better way to spend part of it than hiking up to Portage Pass
The hike will reward us with excellent views of Portage Glacier on one side and Prince William Sound on the other ! From times past the route through to portage was used by Alaska natives and Russian fur traders.
This is one of my favorite shorter hikes and I find that the area has a great energy to it if you are in tune to that sort of thing.
It is a steep climb but a relatively easy 2 to 3 miles round trip on an established trail with about 750 feet of elevation gain.
MEET AT CARRS HUFFMAN to carpool to Whittier.
HOW TO GET TO TRAILHEAD : After going thru the tunnel, take the first right past the railroad tracks onto a gravel road that is marked as forest access. Trailhead will be on right
SPECIAL NOTES : The tunnel cost $12 dollars to go thru (They let you out of town for free )
CREATIVE STUFF : The first of what I hope to be many creative artsy group photo shoot possibly involving top hats will occur at the top
