B Day Hike To Portage Pass

It's my b-day weekend and what better way to spend part of it than hiking up to Portage Pass
The hike will reward us with excellent views of Portage Glacier on one side and Prince William Sound on the other ! From times past the route through to portage was used by Alaska natives and Russian fur traders.
This is one of my favorite shorter hikes and I find that the area has a great energy to it if you are in tune to that sort of thing.
It is a steep climb but a relatively easy 2 to 3 miles round trip on an established trail with about 750 feet of elevation gain.

MEET AT CARRS HUFFMAN to carpool to Whittier.

HOW TO GET TO TRAILHEAD : After going thru the tunnel, take the first right past the railroad tracks onto a gravel road that is marked as forest access. Trailhead will be on right

SPECIAL NOTES : The tunnel cost $12 dollars to go thru (They let you out of town for free )

CREATIVE STUFF : The first of what I hope to be many creative artsy group photo shoot possibly involving top hats will occur at the top

Good morning everyone! Let's park near the construction zone ..where the dumpsters use to be...Look for the cute red Toyota yards with moose lights. Let's try to leave by 10:20 so we can make the 11:30 tunnel tunnel

Non-hiker has bailed. See ya at Carrs.

Catherine - How many hours do you estimate it will take to hike up and back? Reason for question is: I may have non-hiker waiting at trailhead and they would like some idea of how long that might be.

There are no time constraints for me!

Mike, the trail info site says it's 4 miles round trip so should not be that long...

    Are dogs welcome?

    July 26

    • catherine

Only one dog per person...and only if your dog is well behaved and stays close to you and you can prevent him from chasing/ killiing wildlife....

Catherine - What time do you plan to be at the trailhead?

    July 29

    • catherine

Mike I am planning for the 11:30 tunnel to Whittier..so I am guessing we will be at the trailhead around 11:45 ....possible a little bit after that

Found this map of upper Portage lake, looks like Baird Peak, not Byron peak, as I was thinking, might be 'doable' in the summer from the pass.
