  • Are you an experienced backpacker who is hardy, curious and not afraid to explore? It would be fun to get up into the hanging valleys and tarns up between Indian Valley and Ship Pass.  The area looks breathtaking and unspoiled. (from above) This will be 3 days of partially trail-less hiking, much of it above treeline. There will undoubtedly be some bushwhacking at times but the terrain looks pretty straightforward. (not sketchy)

Plan to hike 6-10 miles and gain[masked] feet elevation per day.

We can carpool to trailhead, looking into routes and the possibility of making this a traverse, am in initial planning stages and just fishing to see who's game!  I think I'd like to start at Indian and end up at Glen Alps but still gathering info. Any personal knowledge that more experienced adventurers wish to share is welcomed!

    Dogs welcome.

Tomorrow-Williwaw (walrus lake) overnighter or Mt Significant from Ram Valley dayhike? I can't decide but gotta do something before I return to work.

Would like to do an overnighter (pack remains where left last night) but not crazy about Williwaw - no alternatives in mind however. Interested in Significant day hike; have hiked Magnificent from Mile-high rd, which was a nice hike.

Am interested in Mt. Significant day hike. If you backpack somewhere I might join you part way and then return.

It's pouring so I'm gonna cancel. If it's nice tomorrow I'd love to do something-dayhike or overnighter so let's stay in touch!

The weather forecast is basically rain for the next 7 days.

    • Stephanie

      24/7?

      August 24

    • Bill B.

I am sure not 24/7 but it appears enough everyday to keep things wet and the ground slick on the grades.

Huge bummer for you guys :( But hey, holler if you want to go run this afternoon!

Weather is looking less than stellar, according to channel 2. I will most likely show if you all do though. I don't want to be one of THOSE people. The knee seems better now. I will know more when we start the Ship Lake decent. Thank you for your healing wishes.

glad knee is better but I'm cancelling.

I did not head out today as planned. The weather was a factor, as was a knee issue. Will see how everything is tomorrow morning.

great photo! I think those lower lakes are boggy so we'll shoot for the skinny lake in the hanging valley!

I've emailed you with details on car shuttle-we won't leave any valuables in our vehicles.

Last weekend I hiked from Glen Alps to Indian via climbing Mt. Williwaw. About four miles + of the Indian Valley trail was quite overgrown, but once you get out of it, it was gorgeous. I would definitely start at that end. I have been around that hill into the lakes north of Bird Ridge Overlook, great camping there! I would definitely come if I could.

Maybe when Maureen gets back we can all get together for a cup of coffee or something and discuss routing. I have reasons I do not like the Bidarka - Overlook route such as it is 1500 feet of elevation gain in a mile with a pack and partly through brush. Also a 700 - 800 feet drop to the tarn.

  • Stephanie

Looking at a topo map I am not sure of this possibility: Indian Creek Pass to the tarns. From there I see two possibilities to reach the N Fork Ship Creek to Bird Creek Pass and out through Bird Creek. Maybe too much brush?

    • maureen

Shane and Ron have an idea closest to what I'm hoping to do... Of course we have been talking about this for 3 years so that may be the reason.

      August 11

    • Stephanie

I was just proposing the Bird Creek route in lieu of Glen Alps because the valley looks so lush/inviting from above. It looked possible on a topo map but I never hear anyone talk of it so I wasn't sure. Too bad it is not maintained. The above plans sound good to me!

      August 11

  • Bill B.

Is there anyway a map can be posted that shows the tarns we are headed for?

    August 9

    • maureen

I haven't been paying much attention to the comments, sorry. Yes planned on going in from Indian, then accessing a low pass near Bidarka. From there check out lakes and possibly head out ship pass. I am open to nicely worded suggestions, especially regarding how far we can get up into those hanging valleys on the south of Indian. Agree no intention of hiking out Bird Creek as I'm not crazy about that much bush whacking.

I will be out of town till the 16th so talk among yourself :))))

  • Janetta

I am interested- but I may be out of town for family heath issues should know for sure within the next 7-10 days

    July 27

  • Ron

This is somewhat tentative at present. I have some issues to see about but should have then taken care of my this time. Would love to get out for a few days in this area. It is a beautiful location. To the north of Indian Valley is really cool.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
