Hike Near Point

Near Point is a rounded alpine knob with views of the Alaska Range, Cook Inlet, and Anchorage. Distance is 7 miles, with 2000 feet of elevation gain. This trail is easy by Chugach State Park standards, but the final 1/3 is steep. We may split into pace groups and might stop to pick berries, so plan to be out 4-6 hours depending on your hiking speed.

Suggested Gear: The weather looks good, but as always be prepared for variable conditions. Also bring snacks, water, and bear spray.

Driving Directions: From Hillside Dr: east (uphill) on Upper O’Malley Rd, left on Prospect Dr, left on Sidorof Ln, right into trailhead entrance.

Trail Map: http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/hillsideblck.pdf

Parking: State parks sticker or $5 day fee required.

Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Please have a leash available, and be prepared to clean up.

Warning: Always take precautions to prevent vehicle break-ins at trailheads. Don't leave valuables in your car!

Nice relaxing hike in very pleasant weather conditions. Found a good blueberry patch, and also picked a few watermelon berries and crowberries. As a bonus, Mina got to see her first bull moose. Thanks for coming, Mina and Sim!

Good morning. We have a "dense fog advisory" in effect until 10:00 am, but it's sunny up above per the Glen Alps webcam. NWS forecast is: "Partly sunny. Areas of morning fog...reducing visibilities to one quarter mile or less at times. Highs in the 60s. Light winds."

This is my recovery hike after going up South Suicide on Thursday, so I'll be going at a medium pace. I'd like to spend some time exploring and looking for blueberries, so I expect to be out longer than usual for this hike.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
