Glen Alps - Flat Top Parking Lot (map)
From the Glen Alps/Flat Top parking area, we'll ski or snowshoe
(whatever your preference) out to Powerline Trail then head down approximately 2 1/2 miles to the Hidden Valley Bridge, breaking off the trail to the left. (the bridge is now buried in deep snow) Ski or snowshoe up toward Hidden Valley but instead of heading straight toward the Hidden Lake Bowl, we'll bear left toward the 'shoulder' coming off the ridge-line leading to the summit of 5,100ft. O'Malley (This is the same ridge-line reached from the steeper 'Ballfield' approach on the other side).....Estimated round-trip distance: 10 miles. BRING: Layered non-cotton clothing, head, hand & eye protection. Water, thermos of warm drink, snacks & lunch (eat & drink often..) Snowshoes (and 'float-extensions' if your particular brand uses them) 'Kahtoolas' are highly recommended as are trek or ski poles...TIME: 5-7 hrs.DOGS: Sure..As long as they can handle the cold.
Looking good ( even moderate winds would be a nice change ! ). I'm going to bring my ice axe and kahtoolas in case there's a wind swept ridge to follow up.
Looks like avalanche risk will be low to moderate but I'll be super cautious about it after watching some testing videos from Summit/Turnagain earlier today showing how quickly/easily failures can happen on even quite shallow slopes.
Sounds great....I'll check back here in the morning before I head up there to meet you.
About 20F with no wind out here, can't see Flattop yet, a little foggy but supposed to clear this afternoon. See you up there.
Forecast for the day is clear and 21 degrees.......hope NO 'wind'....
