For me this needs to be a short quick hike on Saturday morning - I have to work in the afternoon at 2 PM. Potter to McHugh is a little over 3 miles then on to Rainbow is a 4.2 miles more for total of a little more than 7 miles. We will actually hike the other direction so we can drop off shuttle vehicles as we drive out the Seward Highway. Meet at the Potter trailhead parking lot (on left side of Seward Hwy; past Potter Marsh then just 200 yards past the historical railroad engine, on opposite side of the road). Meet here at 9 AM. We will leave as many cars as possible here, carpooling on to Rainbow trailhead (past the large McHugh parking lot about 4 miles on the left). We'll hike from Rainbow to McHugh. If you only want to hike 4 miles, you can stop here. If you want to hike back to a car at Rainbow you can do that. Or, Mary and I are going to continue on to the Potter trailhead where we left cars on the drive out. Maybe this sounds a little confusing. Not really - just lots of options. Weather is predicted to be sunny though we may be shaded for large parts of the hike by the ridges of Rainbow and McHugh Peaks. Bring a small pack and dress in layers. Water and a small snack may be called for. Bring a warm hat and at least light weight gloves. Well behaved dogs are welcome. There are likely to be moose in the woods or near the trail.

It was windy and cloudy in the beginning, but turned out to be a great hike. Better to bring poles at this time of the year.

sloppy but warm. Best in this freeze/thaw temperature to take ski poles for traction and balance. Makes a difference for sure.

It was a typical Turnagain Arm WINDY day. On the trail up in the woods most of the wind was blasting overhead so we got the benefits of great sounds and cooling breeze but not as much wind on us as might be expected. Trail varied from snowy to icy to bare ground, some dry and some a bit muddy.

All in all, fabulous day to be out. great group. Lots of fun
