Moose Creek Railroad Grade Hike - Mellow

  • June 30, 2007 · 10:00 AM

Here is a mellow day hike the Alaska Prospectors Society has offered to share with Adventures MeetUp members. If you participate please thank them for the generosity of sharing thier hike. Also, when you return from the hike, please post your commnets on the web page and photos if you take any. Sally Dabelsteen is the person who estended the invitation. YOu can RSVP to the MeetUp site to encourage others to join in but any questions need to be directed to Sally via her e-mail she listed below. The Alaska Prospectors Society is an active local group. Most of our members are over 55 years. We meet every Saturday to go hiking in and around Anchorage. We usually hike 3 to 5 hours. I would like to invite any member of Adventures to join us this Saturday, June 30th, at 10 am. We will meet in the parking lot of the Whaler Bar on Muldoon Road. This hike would be great for families, those who want to walk but not uphill, and those who want to see an interesting piece of Alaska's mining and railroad history. We then will car pool to Moose Creek near Sutton and hike the old railroad bed toward Palmer. My e-mail address is [masked] if you have any questions.

Lots of fun, great folks. We learned a new meaning for "mellow" however.

The hike part was awful and deserves the lowest rating. But the overall event was saved by going to an alternate plan. We started hiking from the Moose Creek Bridge on the Glenn Hwy and walked downstream along Moose Creek hoping to intersect the old railroad grade. There was a poorly defined trail at first, but then the trail disappeared and we resorted to bushwhacking to detour around creek water that was flooding the area in places and around sloughing hillside in another place. We did see some old rails exposed by sloughing hillside in one place, but found no actual railbed that we could walk on. We bailed at the first opportunity. Then we had a snack rest in an old farm field, and headed back to the highway. Plan A was such a bust we went on to plan B. We opted for a lunch/coffee break in Sutton and then drove up the Jonesville Road to an old coal mining spot where we had fun hunting fossils. We found lots of leaf fossils and some petrified wood. The Prospectors knew where to look.

If this is mellow for Old Prospectors, can't imagine what strenuous would include!! We were up down and all around. But interesting and adventurous- and even collected some fossils.
