Have you ever driven from Portage to Girdwood looking at that huge mountain wall running along the skyline and wondered ...... what's it like up there? Let?s go see this Saturday. Penguin Peak is a sort of end point at the west end of that ridge. A friend of mine once hiked from there all the way to California Creek in Girdwood, in one day. I want to go scope it out now with the idea of maybe going back at a later date to cover that whole route in 2 days. For now, Penguin Peak and a mile or more of exploring on top of that awesomely scenic ridge. Come on along. Let's meet at Carrs Huffman parking lot. I drive a brownish Subaru station wagon with a Yakima Rocket box and very wide roof racks. I'll be in the parking lot as far from the Seward Highway as possible and as close over towards the Post Office and South Side Bistro direction. If this does not make sense, send me an e-mail or call 244-6610. Meet at 9 AM Saturday. We'll be out 3 - 5 hours, unless more by group consensus. I strongly recommend ski poles and/ or an ice axe. The slopes getting up to Penguin are steep and we may need to cross some snow. Bring the normal stuff - clothes for warm, cold, wind and rain. Though, if it raining too badly we will not go up these steep grassy slopes but will redirect our efforts maybe to Bird Ridge. Bring food and water and a sense of adventure. Dogs are welcome. this would make a fabulous Tuesday Hike-N-Lung hike. I will bet there aren't many who have seen this neck of the Chugach. complete with a black bear curious about us. Didn't come close but didn't scare off either. What a blast.

Weather in Anchorage looked marginal and ... it seemed down there like it might be. But, we had warm, almost no wind, no rain at all and we were in and out of clouds all day. Round trip 5 3/4 hours to the Penguin summit.

I want to do part of this as a Tueday night Heart 'n Lunger some time in July. Get ready you Tuesday night junkies.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
