Heart 'n Lungers - Turnagain View near Bird Creek

We'll go up and up to a great overlook with views of Turnagain Arm. Bring binoculars. We may be able to see belugas. To car pool meet at Carr Huffman by 6:15 so we can leave at 6:30 PM. Meet way over by the recycling bins in the northwest corner of the parking lot. Since the drive is a bit long let's meet later - at 7:00 PM at the parking lot at Bird Creek. Take the last left turn as you go through the community of Bird, by the Bird House garage. Drive to parking lot at end of the road. Plan on about 3 hours or a bit more: we'll go UP the well defined trail after walking about 10 minutes from the trailhead. Our plan will be to get up through the alder zone on a 4-wheeler trail then smaller trail higher up. Above treeline we can wander or meander but the goal is to reach a ridgeline high above the Arm to take advantage of great views. I did the Up in just over 90 minutes on June 30 but .. . let's count on 2 hours up and 1 hour down. I hike with ski poles on steep ones like this (trust me!!!). Dress in layers and bring wind shell, warm hat and light gloves. You never know what conditions might be like 1500' - 2000' above. Bring plenty of water and a light snack. Any hike going through forest and brush like this you want to consider spray for both bugs and bears. If you do not have these, no worries, plenty of others will have them. Dogs OK; I'll have Chili and Caesar and hope they stay away from porcupines, again (see dog & 'pine photos posted at June 26 Tuesday night hike link). Like most of these Tuesday nighters, this one is OK for those who want to start up but not go all the way. It is so nice up in this basin above Bird Creek that I recommend this hike to all, even those who do not want the elevation gain for fitness. Come part way up: savor the mountains and good company. From the ridge crest views will be spectacular so think "high" for the views. It has become an Adventurers MeetUp tradition to join up again after the hike at Moose's Tooth. Even if you miss the hike you can join us at the Tooth about 11 PM

Is it named Penguin Peak because of its steep and slick back?

Weather was way better than it looked in Anchorage. Lots of interest in getting up high even though the trail was steep. A few people thought they both smelled and heard a bear in the bushes. My wife and I had seem a black bear here before.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
